Consciousness science is fragmented, with theories operating orthogonally and accumulating anomalies. The principle of recurrency—functional and architectural feedback loops—offers a unifying scaffold. All theories tacitly invoke feedback loops and can be re-expressed along a single axis of recursion. Four nested levels (cellular, local inter-areal, global, and lateral) map onto state, phenomenal content, manipulative access, and experiential similarity, tying evolved anatomy to phenomenon. The phenomenal-versus-access distinction dissolves into a graded cascade where deeper recursion expands reportable variables. Recurrence is evolutionarily favored, rebutting feed-forward objections, while brain-body loops ground selfhood. Clinically, targeting recurrent pathways promises new biomarkers and alleviation in disorders of consciousness.

This paper connects Integrated Information Theory (IIT) of consciousness to Immanuel Kant's philosophy by arguing that the theory's core identity between an experience and its Φ-structure is a constitutive a priori principle, not an empirical hypothesis. Drawing on Michael Friedman's defense of similar principles in physics, the author shows how this principle enables applying mathematical formalism to phenomenology, gives empirical meaning to concepts, and allows scientific testing of predictions. The paper advocates using this neo-Kantian approach to strengthen the epistemological foundations of other mathematical theories of consciousness, making them more transparent and empirically tractable.

A commentary argues that a proposed multidimensional heuristic for structuring artificial consciousness research cannot determine whether phenomenal consciousness is nomologically possible in machines. Behavioral-cognitive profiles lack a justified principle linking function to experience, and the awareness case study shows that externally specified goals can produce as-if control rather than original intentionality. The heuristic overlooks that substrate similarity to the adult human brain is currently indispensable for justifiably inferring consciousness. Thus the framework provides a blueprint for a more sophisticated philosophical zombie but cannot tell whether anyone is there.

Supervised stroboscopic light stimulation (SLS) was safe, tolerable, and feasible in adults with depressive symptoms, but efficacy was not established. In a staged program, 31 participants tested 11 SLS parameter sets; no severe adverse reactions occurred, and mean discomfort was low (0.49 out of 10). A subsequent randomized trial assigned 84 participants to four weekly 31-minute sessions of SLS or a low-phenomenology control. Retention was 83.3% (70 of 84 participants), with higher retention in the intervention arm (39 of 42) than the control arm (31 of 42). Exploratory depressive-symptom changes suggested a possible signal on the BDI-II but do not confirm efficacy. The next step is a Phase 2a feasibility trial with a locked protocol.

A novel framework called the Measure Centrality Index (MCI) enables systematic comparison of consciousness theories by assessing how important a given empirical measure is for each theory. Applying the MCI to Global Neuronal Workspace Theory, Integrated Information Theory, and Temporospatial Theory of Consciousness shows that direct comparisons are meaningful for measures such as Lempel-Ziv Complexity, Autocorrelation Window, and possibly Mutual Information, but problematic for anatomical and physiological neural correlates of consciousness because these measures carry different weight across theories. The approach addresses isolated theory evolution and confirmatory bias in consciousness science.

The authors first introduce each framework, then outline a plan for analysis, articulate the philosophical profiles of NN and IIT—including their ontological commitments and epistemological foundations—and finally compare them point-by-point, including their positions on artificial consciousness. The analysis is meta-theoretical, assessing similarities previously noted by Feinberg & Mallatt.

Integrated Information Theory (IIT) of consciousness has been criticized for lack of clarity about how its phenomenological axioms relate to its postulates about cause-effect power. This theoretical paper argues that IIT rests on nine fundamental categories of reason that form a common root for both axioms and postulates. The connection between them is grounded in this categorial lexicon, which is justified through phenomenological and transcendental deduction. The analysis further distinguishes conceptual from formalized postulates, clarifies why categorial lexica are unique, and provides an IIT account of objectivity by showing how the physical is redefined through categories. These results aim to resolve criticisms of IIT's theoretical core and foster mutual understanding between defenders and critics.

Two frameworks for explaining conscious experience, Neurobiological Naturalism (NN) and Integrated Information Theory (IIT), are compared from a meta-theoretical perspective. IIT treats consciousness as a fundamental feature of the world, investigating its structure mathematically through integrated information. NN treats consciousness as an emergent feature confined to living organisms with complex brains, investigated via neurobiology, complex systems theory, and irreducible subjectivity. The two theories are found to be constitutionally different, including in their stances on artificial consciousness.
