Facilitating Meditation with Focused Ultrasound Neuromodulation: A First Investigation in Experienced Practitioners

Focused ultrasound stimulation of the caudate nucleus significantly improves self-reported meditative depth and mood in experienced vipassana meditators, and is accompanied by reduced heart rate and increased heart rate variability. These physiological changes strongly correlate with reported depth, suggesting a mechanistic link between reduced arousal and successful meditation. Stimulation of the posterior cingulate cortex or insula did not produce similar effects. The findings indicate that targeted neuromodulation may help lower the barrier to consistent meditation practice for novice or intermediate meditators.

Integrated Phenomenology and Brain Connectivity Demonstrate Changes in Nonlinear Processing in Jhana Advanced Meditation.

The computational unconscious: Adaptive narrative control, psychopathology, and subjective well-being

A computational theory called adaptive narrative control explains how subpersonal processes shape conscious experience to enable adaptive behavior. Systems with an attention schema can anticipate the epistemic and pragmatic consequences of attentional states, using mental action—endogenous control of attention—to regulate affective states. This capacity also produces avoidant mental action or motivated inattention, which is argued to be a core mechanism underlying psychopathology, leading to rigid belief formation, reduced emotional recognition (alexithymia), and decreased subjective well-being under certain environmental conditions. The account partially echoes Freudian defense mechanisms and introduces a computational unconscious. It refines the REBUS model of psychedelic therapy and explains improvements in well-being from meditation.

Toward a Unified Model of Advanced Meditation, Human Development, Meditation Maps, and Transtradition Metaphors: Facing Impermanence, Suffering, and Death

Advanced meditation can lead to a transformative process resembling a metaphorical death and rebirth, where an old identity dissolves and a new one emerges. This process, described in detail by the Burmese meditation master Mahāsī Sayādaw, is associated with access to bliss, peace, wisdom, and the reduction of suffering—states regarded as ultimate aims of human life. While scientific research has measured certain aspects of human development, inner development related to advanced meditation has been neglected. The authors propose an outline of this death-and-rebirth process to provide a foundation for scientific investigation of meditative development and a deeper understanding of human potential.

ENIGMA-Meditation: Worldwide Consortium for Neuroscientific Investigations of Meditation Practices.

Meditation practices, which have shown therapeutic benefits for conditions like depression, pain, addiction, and anxiety, have been studied with neuroimaging over the past decade. However, existing neuroscientific models are based on small, heterogeneous datasets, limiting generalizability and replicability. The ENIGMA-Meditation consortium is the first worldwide collaborative effort to conduct systematic meta- and mega-analyses of globally distributed neuroimaging data using standardized methods. This framework aims to improve statistical power and address multidomain heterogeneity in meditation practice types, experience, and experimental design. The consortium will generate rigorous neuroscientific insights into the mechanisms underlying meditation's therapeutic effects on psychological and cognitive attributes.

Dynamic brain states underlying advanced concentrative absorption meditation: A 7-T fMRI-intensive case study.

Advanced meditation involves states and stages that develop with experience. A case study using 7-T fMRI and dynamic functional connectivity analysis of a meditator practicing jhāna advanced absorptive concentration meditation (ACAM-J) identified three distinct brain states: a default-mode network (DMN)-anticorrelated state, a hyperconnected state, and a sparsely connected state. The DMN-anticorrelated state was more prevalent during ACAM-J than control conditions and increased with deeper meditation. The hyperconnected state, marked by elevated thalamocortical and somatomotor connectivity, was also more common during ACAM-J but decreased over the session, corresponding to reports of wider attention and reduced physical sensations. This suggests that functional neuroimaging can track the dynamics of altered states of consciousness in advanced meditators.

Self-Transcendence Accompanies Aesthetic Chills

Aesthetic chills—the pleasurable, cold sensation often experienced during music or film—are robustly linked to self-transcendence, a positive altered state involving ego-dissolution, connectedness, and moral elevation. In 2,937 participants exposed to chills-eliciting stimuli, chills occurrence and intensity formed a tightly interrelated construct with measures of self-transcendence, even after controlling for prior state and trait differences. The findings suggest that self-transcendence experiences can be reliably evoked through exposure to audiovisual media that elicit chills, offering a more accessible path to study and apply self-transcendence for well-being and prosociality compared to conventional methods like meditation or psychedelics.

Fire Kasina advanced meditation produces experiences comparable to psychedelic and near-death experiences: A pilot study.

An intensive meditation practice called Fire Kasina can induce mystical experiences comparable to those produced by high-dose psychedelics. Six individuals completed a retreat and reported experiences they described as the most intense of their lives. Mean scores on the Revised Mystical Experience Questionnaire reached 85%, similar to prior observations with high-dose psilocybin and stronger than moderate-dose psilocybin. Scores on the Hood Mystical Experience Scale averaged 93%, exceeding levels reported for near-death experiences (74%) and high-dose psilocybin (77%). Participants also described substantial shifts in worldview following the retreat.

An advanced meditative state called extended cessation (EC), where consciousness is voluntarily suspended and later resumes with heightened clarity and equanimity, provides a natural model for studying consciousness. Using ultra-high-resolution 7T fMRI with dense sampling of three individuals, the research mapped whole-brain activity, connectivity, gradients, and eigenmodes during EC, linking them to brain chemistry and cognitive maps. EC increased activity in sensory regions, reduced activity in higher-order association areas, subcortex, and brainstem, expanded the principal cortical gradient, and decreased low-order global eigenmodes.

Mindful young brains and minds: a systematic review of the neural correlates of mindfulness-based interventions in youth.

Neuroelectrophysiological correlates of extended cessation of consciousness in advanced meditators: A multimodal EEG and MEG study

Advanced meditators can enter a state called extended cessation (EC) in which they intentionally suppress consciousness and later emerge with clarity and equanimity. In the first electrophysiological study of EC, five meditators were recorded with EEG and MEG. EC markedly reduced alpha power and tended to increase neural complexity, unlike sleep, anesthesia, or disorders of consciousness. The findings indicate that the neural correlates of EC are distinct from other unconscious states and that complexity alone is not sufficient for consciousness, offering new insights into advanced meditation and human flourishing.

High-precision neurofeedback-guided meditation training optimises real-world self-guided meditation practice for well-being

Personalized high-precision neurofeedback (NF) can help novice meditators better disengage from mental activity during meditation, improving emotional well-being and mindful awareness. In a single-blind, controlled study, 40 novices received two days of meditation training with feedback from either their own or a matched participant's posterior cingulate cortex (PCC) activity, measured using 7 Tesla fMRI. The experimental group showed stronger functional decoupling of PCC from dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, indicating improved control over disengagement. This led to greater improvements in emotional well-being and mindful awareness during a week of real-world self-guided meditation, supporting the utility of NF-guided meditation training.

Ketamine pharmacotherapy for major depressive disorder: A narrative review

This paper bridges that gap by introducing principles from exercise science—such as programming, periodization, and core training variables (volume, frequency, duration, density, intensity)—to contemplative training contexts. It proposes defining training intensity as the graded phenomenal presence of specific meditative qualities alongside minimization of counteractive qualities, referenced against a normative standard. Practitioner perspectives on meditation-based preparation for psychedelic experiences

Experienced meditators who also use psychedelics expect meditation to enhance acceptance and present-moment focus during psychedelic sessions, while increasing feelings of oceanic boundlessness and reducing anxious ego-dissolution. Among those with limited meditation experience (1-3 years) and few psychedelic sessions (1-20), adhering to a specific meditation tradition was linked to higher perceived benefits of meditation for psychedelic preparation. However, for highly experienced meditators (10+ years) with limited psychedelic use, non-adherents reported higher perceived benefits. Loving-Kindness Meditation was rated the most beneficial preparatory practice. Participants recommended about three weeks of daily 30-minute sessions, favoring online and asynchronous delivery.

Brain stimulation enhances dispositional mindfulness in PTSD: an exploratory sham-controlled rTMS trial.

In a pilot trial, 31 adults with PTSD received either real or sham repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) over the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. Mindfulness scores, measured by the Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire, did not improve significantly immediately after treatment when corrected for multiple comparisons. However, by three months after treatment, those who received real rTMS showed significant gains in total mindfulness and nonreactivity. The delayed improvement suggests the benefits of rTMS on dispositional mindfulness may take time to emerge. The findings indicate that brain stimulation might eventually help reduce PTSD-related suffering by boosting mindfulness.

Mindfulness, cognition, and long-term meditators: Toward a science of advanced meditation

Mindfulness-based therapy regulates brain connectivity in major depression
