Effects of cannabis use on antidepressant treatment response to repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation and ketamine

medRxiv Preprint Server June 28, 2023 Mohammad Ali Shenasa, Houtan Totonchi Afshar, Eric A. Miller et al. preprint

Background The antidepressant effects of ketamine and repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) are hypothesized to rely on mechanisms of long-term-potentiation and synaptic plasticity. Cannabis, via activation of CB1 receptors has been shown to impair synaptic plasticity, suggesting that cannabis use might moderate the antidepressant effects of ketamine and/or rTMS.

Neurotoxic effects of hallucinogenic drugs 25H-NBOMe and 25H-NBOH in organotypic hippocampal cultures

Heliyon June 27, 2023 Larissa Marcely Gomes Cassiano, Marina da Silva Oliveira, Wellington Alves de Barros et al. 7 citations

Introduction: receptors. Although cases of toxicity associated with the recreational use of substituted phenethylamines are frequently reported, there is a lack of information on the possible neurotoxic effects of NBOMe and NBOH in the brain hippocampus, a major neurogenesis region. Objectives: This study aimed at assessing the phenotypic and molecular effects of prolonged exposure of the...

NEUROPLASTIC TREATMENT for MENTAL DISORDERS

PsyArXiv June 11, 2023 Abraham Peled preprint

It is not a secret that treatments for mental disorders are limited in their therapeutic efficacy. The reason for this, among other things, is the lack of knowledge regarding the etiology (causes) of psychiatric disorders. For many years efforts to combine Computational Neuroscience with psychiatry are beginning to yield some insights that may connect phenomenology to brain disturbances and...

Long-term benefits of mindfulness on white matter tracts underlying the cortical midline structures in panic disorder: A 2-year longitudinal study.

Psychiatry and Clinical Neurosciences June 2023 Minji Bang, Borah Kim, Kang Soo Lee et al.

We aimed to examine the long-term benefits of mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) on white matter plasticity in the cortical midline structures (CMS) for a period of 2 years in patients with panic disorder and the relationships between white matter changes in the CMS and severity of state and trait symptoms. Seventy-one participants were enrolled and underwent diffusion tensor imaging at...

[Combination of ketamine and esketamine with Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) therapy for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder].

L'Encephale June 2023 Hugo Bottemanne, Alice Arnould, Amaury Najar et al.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), characterized by the combination of obsession and compulsion, is a clinical and therapeutic challenge. Many patients with OCD do not respond to first-line treatments such as serotonin selective reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and exposure and response prevention psychotherapy (ERP). For these resistant patients, some preliminary studies have shown that ketamine,...

Differences in brain connectivity of meditators during assessing neurocognition via gamified experimental logic task: A machine learning approach.

The neuroradiology journal June 1, 2023 Ashwini S Savanth, Vijaya Pa, Ajay K Nair et al.

Meditation practices increase attention, memory, and self-awareness. The neuroscientific study of meditation has helped gain useful insights into the functional changes in the brain. In this study, we have assessed the performance of meditators with different years of practice while performing an engaging task rather than studying the meditation practice itself. This task helps assess many...

Effectiveness of mindfulness-based interventions on mental, cognitive outcomes and neuroplastic changes in older adults with mild cognitive impairment: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Journal of Advanced Nursing May 29, 2023 Yihong Leow, Nur Lidiya Binte Abdul Rashid, Piyanee Klainin‐Yobas et al.

Aims: To evaluate the effectiveness of mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) on mental and cognitive outcomes including, anxiety, depression, attention, memory, global cognition and neuroplastic changes in older adults with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Design: Systematic review and meta-analysis. Data source: A three-step search strategy was conducted on eight electronic databases, grey...

Continuous Theta Burst Stimulation to the left anterior medial prefrontal cortex influences metacognitive efficiency.

Neuroimage May 15, 2023 Justyna Hobot, Zuzanna Skóra, Michał Wierzchoń et al.

The contribution of the prefrontal areas to visual awareness is critical for the Global Neuronal Workspace Theory and higher-order theories of consciousness. The goal of the present study was to test the potential engagement of the anterior medial prefrontal cortex (aMPFC) in visual awareness judgements. We aimed to temporarily influence the neuronal dynamics of the left aMPFC via...

Harmine exerts anxiolytic effects by regulating neuroinflammation and neuronal plasticity in the basolateral amygdala.

International Immunopharmacology May 5, 2023 Zhi-Heng Zheng, Xing-Cheng Lin, Ying-ling Lu et al.

Increasing evidence indicates that an altered immune system is closely linked to the pathophysiology of anxiety disorders, and inhibition of neuroinflammation may represent an effective therapeutic strategy to treat anxiety disorders. Harmine, a beta-carboline alkaloid in various medicinal plants, has been widely reported to display anti-inflammatory and potentially anxiolytic effects. However,...

Whole-brain mapping reveals the divergent impact of ketamine on the dopamine system

bioRxiv Preprint Server April 12, 2023 Malika S. Datta, Yannan Chen, Shradha Chauhan et al. 6 citations preprint

Ketamine is a multifunctional drug with clinical applications as an anesthetic, as a pain management medication and as a transformative fast-acting antidepressant. It is also abused as a recreational drug due to its dissociative property. Recent studies in rodents are revealing the neuronal mechanisms that mediate the complex actions of ketamine, however, its long-term impact due to prolonged...
