LSD and Onset of Schizophrenia

The Canadian Journal of Psychiatry February 1, 1981 Alec Roy 7 citations

In a matched controlled study 37 chronic schizophrenics who had taken LSD preceding the onset of their illness were compared with schizophrenics who had not. There were no significant differences between the groups either on age at onset of symptoms or for age at first admission.

Effects of selected opioid agonists and antagonists on DMT- and LSD-25-induced disruption of food-rewarded bar pressing behavior in the rat.

Psychopharmacology 1981 D M Ruffing, E F Domino

Several opioid agonists and antagonists interact with N,N-dimethyltryptamine (DMT) and lysergic acid diethylamide-25 (LSD) in adult male Holtzman rats trained on a positive reinforcement, fixed ratio 4 (FR4) behavioral schedule, i.e., a reward of 0.01 ml sugar-sweetened milk was earned on every fourth bar press. DMT (3.2 and 10.0 mg/kg) and LSD (0.1 mg/kg) given IP with 0.9% NaCl pretreatment,...

LSD: My Problem Child

The Antioch Review 1981 Barbara Kohn, Albert Hofmann 147 citations

Numerous accounts of the discovery of have been published in English; none, unfortunately, have been completely accurate. Here, at last, the father of details the history of his problem child and his long and fruitful career as a research chemist. In a real sense, this book is the inside story of the birth of the Psychedelic Age, and it cannot be denied that we have here a highly candid and...

The effects of d-lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), 2,5-dimethoxy-4-methylamphetamine (DOM) and d-amphetamine on operant responding in control and 6-hydroxydopamine-treated rats.

Pharmacology, Biochemistry, and Behavior November 1980 Randall L. Commissaris, William H. Lyness, J J Cordon et al.

The purpose of the present study was to determine the role of central catecholaminergic neuronal systems in the effects of LSD, DOM and d-amphetamine on fixed ratio (FR) operant responding in rats. Food-deprived male rats were trained to press a bar for food reinforcement on a FR-40 schedule. Control responding on this schedule is characterized by a rapid, constant rate of responding...

Effects of the phenethylamine derivatives, BL-3912, fenfluramine, and Sch-12679, in rats trained with LSD as a discriminative stimulus.

Psychopharmacology 1980 Jerrold C Winter

Six rats were trained to discriminate the effects of LSD (100 micrograms/kg) and saline in a two-lever choice task. They were then tested with each of three phenethylamine derivatives, BL-3912 (2,5-dimethoxy-4-methyl-alpha-ethyl-phenethylamine), fenfluramine (N-ethyl-alpha-methyl-m-(trifluoro-methyl)phenethylamine), and Sch-12679...

Behavioral thermoregulation in rats during hyperthermia induced by lysergic acid diethylamide

Neuroscience Letters 1980 Naotoshi Murakami, Yoshihiro Sakai, Shigeki Ooki 9 citations

In free moving rats trained to press a bar to escape from radiant heat, lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD, 8-16 micrograms) produced a significant and dose-dependent increase of the bar-pressing rate when injected intraperitoneally. During the increase in the bar-pressing rate, the rectal temperature showed an increase and both the tail-skin and the ambient temperature selected decreased...

Effects of inducers and/or inhibitors on metabolism of lysergic acid diethylamide in rat liver microsomes

Xenobiotica 1980 Takako Inoue, Tetsukichi Niwaguchi, Toshiro Murata 3 citations

1. When lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) was incubated with liver microsomes obtained from untreated rats, SKF 525-A inhibited most potently the hydroxylation at the 13-position, moderately inhibited N-demethylation at the 6-position, and least affected the metabolism of the side-chain at the 8 position. Furthermore, an atmosphere of 80% CO and 20% O2 (v/v) caused max. inhibition in...

Enterohepatic recycling of phenolphthalein, morphine, lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) and diphenylacetic acid in the rat Hydrolysis of glucuronic acid conjugates in the gut lumen

Xenobiotica 1980 Robert A Parker, P. C. Hirom, P. Millburn 46 citations

1. Biliary elimination in female Wistar albino rats 3 h after i.p. injection of [3H]phenolphthalein, [3H]morphine, 14C-LSD and [14C]diphenylacetic acid was 90%, 45%, 75% and 57% respectively, predominantly as glucuronides. 2. Infusion of 3 h bile from the previous experiments into the duodena of bile-duct-cannulated animals demonstrated enterohepatic circulation, amounting in 24 h to 85%, 41%,...

Sensory and associative effects of LSD in classical conditioning of rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) nictitating membrane response.

Journal of Comparative and Physiological Psychology 1980 I. Gormezano, John A. Harvey 29 citations

Three experiments were conducted to determine the effects of LSD (30 nmol/kg) on the acquisition of the rabbit's classically conditioned nictitating membrane response. Experiment 1 revealed that LSD significantly enhanced the acquisition of conditioned responses [CRs], and control groups receiving unpaired conditioned stimulus/unconditioned stimulus (CS/UCS) presentations served to identify...

Distortions of Vision and Pain: Two Functional Facets of D-Lysergic Acid Diethylamide

Perceptual and Motor Skills December 1, 1979 John Michael Williams 2 citations

D-lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) produces distortions of visual perception and analgesia. Evidence is advanced from a functional standpoint that the observed visual effects result from an attenuation of light-evoked input to the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) from the purely centripetal pathways of the retina. More slowly responding visual afferents or those with more complex...
