Hospital Pharmacy October 23, 2025 Moomal Memon, Rukhsana Gul, Arif Gul et al. 1 citation

Depression, projected to be the leading cause of global disability by 2030, affects up to 19.62% of Pakistan's population. Treatment-resistant depression (TRD), characterized by poor response to at least two antidepressants, poses a major clinical challenge. Although interventions like ECT exist, their use is limited by systemic barriers. Esketamine, an NMDA receptor antagonist, offers a...

Mindfulness meditation,...

Esketamine Nasal Spray for Treatment-Resistant Bipolar II Depression: A Case Report

Psychiatry Investigation October 15, 2025 Hong-Ci Lin, Chia-Yu Chang, Ching-Huang Lin et al. 1 citation

This case report discusses a 62-year-old male with treatment-resistant bipolar II depression and hypertension. After poor responses to multiple treatments, an add-on esketamine nasal spray (ESK-NS) was introduced in October 2022. Improvement was seen, and the patient's depressive episode was nearly remitted during the maintenance phase. However, recurrence was noted when ESK-NS frequency was...

Economic evaluation of subcutaneous ketamine injections for treatment resistant depression: A randomised, double-blind, active-controlled trial - The KADS study.

Journal of Affective Disorders October 15, 2025 Mary Lou Chatterton, Johana Kevin Perez, Thao Thai et al. 2 citations

Ketamine is effective for treatment resistant depression (TRD); but cost-effectiveness evidence remains limited. To evaluate the cost-effectiveness of subcutaneous ketamine for TRD from health sector and societal perspectives. A cost-utility analysis alongside the KADS randomised controlled trial (RCT) involved 174 participants receiving ketamine or midazolam (active control) twice weekly for 4...

Reperceiving depression: how trait mindfulness enhances perceived support through improved doctor–patient relationships and stigma alleviation in depressed young adults

Frontiers in Psychology October 14, 2025 Danhong Zhu, Yufeng Yang, Jing Wen et al.

Given the established protective function of perceived social support against depressive symptoms, this study investigates how trait mindfulness enhances such support through three mediating factors: therapeutic alliance...

Improvements in health-related quality of life with esketamine nasal spray versus quetiapine extended release.

European Psychiatry October 14, 2025 Andreas Reif, Bernhard T Baune, Jozefien Buyze et al.

Clinical response and remission may not fully reflect patient priorities in treatment-resistant depression (TRD). Health-related quality-of-life (HRQoL) outcomes should be assessed to comprehensively capture treatment benefits. ESCAPE-TRD (NCT04338321) was a 32-week randomized, phase IIIb trial comparing esketamine nasal spray (NS) versus quetiapine extended release (XR), both alongside an...

LSD: Mechanisms and relevance to the treatment of depression

Neuroscience & Biobehavioral Reviews October 10, 2025 Amel Bouloufa, Sarah Delcourte, Thomas Delannay et al. 3 citations

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is one of the most prevalent psychiatric conditions worldwide, affecting over 350 million people. Standard treatments, primarily antidepressants targeting serotonin, noradrenaline, and/or dopamine, are based on the monoamine hypothesis, which links depression to imbalances in these neurotransmitters. A sizable fraction of patients, however, does not get enough...

Control group improvement lower in psilocybin trials for depression

The Brown University Psychopharmacology Update October 10, 2025

A meta‐analysis comprising 17 randomized trials has found that rates of control group improvement in depression studies were lower in psilocybin trials than in studies of esketamine or a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). The results suggest that psilocybin's overall efficacy in the treatment of depression might be overestimated.

Perceptions of a mindfulness-based cognitive therapy intervention: Focus group findings examining acceptability for African Americans with epilepsy.

Epilepsy & Behavior October 9, 2025 Robin E McGee, Elizabeth I Ojemakinde, Nancy J Thompson et al.

Depression commonly co-occurs in people with epilepsy (PWE). Reducing depression in PWE may contribute to improved quality of life and outcomes. Project UPLIFT, a distance-delivered, mindfulness-based cognitive therapy program has reduced depressive symptoms among PWE. Little is known about the acceptability of the program among African Americans with epilepsy. Thus, we conducted a formative...

Mindfulness, Depression, and Fall Risk in Low-Income Older Adults

Research in Health and Medicine October 8, 2025 Aleeyah Uddeen, Janet Lopez, Renata Komalasari et al. 1 citation

Introduction: Mindfulness, through mind-body practices, promotes awareness and presence. Its practice, along with reduced depression, may improve balance and lower fall risk in older adults. This study examined the association between mindfulness, depression, and fall risk among low-income, community-dwelling older adults. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted with 103...

Psychedelic Medicine October 8, 2025 Elise C. Tarbi, Skye A. Miner, Kabir Nigam et al. 1 citation

Background: Cancer poses an existential threat for patients and caregivers. Psilocybin-assisted therapy (PAT) has emerged as a potential tool to meet these existential needs, yet little is known about how patients describe this element of their cancer journey, and how it might be affected by PAT, especially in the group therapy context. Purpose: To explore how patients with cancer and...

Synergistic effects of capsaicin and ketamine on the depression-like behaviors of animals subjected to the chronic unpredictable mild stress protocol.

Physiology & Behavior October 1, 2025 Irving Aguilar-Martínez, J. Góngora-Alfaro, R. Navarro-Polanco et al.

A significant percentage of depression patients are resistant to pharmacological treatments, highlighting the need for novel antidepressant strategies. Ketamine, an NMDA receptor antagonist, produces rapid antidepressant effects and is effective in treatment-resistant cases, but its association with cognitive and behavioral abnormalities resembling schizophrenia limits broader clinical utility....

Efficacy and safety of ketamine maintenance therapy in treatment-resistant depression: A systematic review of treatment protocols and clinical outcomes.

Journal of Affective Disorders October 1, 2025 A. M. Al-Garni, Gustavo Vazquez, Tariq Alotibi et al.

INTRODUCTION Treatment-resistant depression (TRD) represents a significant therapeutic challenge, as conventional treatments demonstrate limited efficacy. Although ketamine's acute antidepressant effects are well-documented, the role of maintenance therapy remains understudied. We conducted a systematic review to assess the efficacy, safety, and optimal implementation strategies of ketamine...
