Foucault and Phenomenology, a Tense and Complex Relationship

The Oxford Handbook of Phenomenologies and Organization Studies January 26, 2023 Aurélie Leclercq-Vandelannoitte

Abstract: In line with observers that have recently reconsidered the relationship between Foucault and phenomenology, this chapter argues that Foucault’s philosophy inevitably falls within the scope of phenomenology, by rediscovering and extending its potentialities (Legrand, 2008). To do justice to the real nature of the relationship between Foucault and phenomenology, this chapter aims to...

On the Full Concretion of Subjectivity in Husserl’s Phenomenology: Contingency and the Transcendental Person

Journal of the British Society for Phenomenology January 6, 2023 Mérédith Laferté-Coutu

ABSTRACT This paper argues that Husserl’s personalist ethics provides a new way to understand the meaning of the full concretion of the transcendental ego in his mature phenomenology. Husserl’s late ethics introduces, at the core of his thinking, a notion of contingency that he associates with irrationality and facticity. This central aspect of human life, namely that contingency traverses it...

Anthropological Phenomenology and the Eventive Ground

Contributions to Phenomenology 2023 Christopher Stephan, C. Jason Throop

Abstract: This chapter theorizes the phenomenological potential of anthropology through an examination of what we will call the “eventive ground” of ethnographic knowledge. Though anthropologists and phenomenologists have reacted to one another’s work, including the now famous early correspondence between Husserl and Levy Bruhl (see Sato, 2014; Throop, 2018), it has only been over the past few...
