Systematic Review on the Mechanisms of Action of Psilocybin in the Treatment of Depression

European Psychiatry March 1, 2023 M. C. Q. Lin, H. Lee, V.-W.-L. Tsang et al.

Introduction Despite emerging evidence suggesting the efficacy of psilocybin in the treatment of mood disorders such as depression, the exact mechanisms by which psilocybin is able to elicit these antidepressant effects remains unknown. Objectives As the use of psilocybin as a treatment modality for depression has garnered increasing interest, this study aims to summarize the existing evidence...

Mentation processes such as excessive mind wandering, rumination, and mindfulness mediate the relationship between ADHD symptoms and anxiety and depression in adults with ADHD

This case report focuses on the negative effects of prostate cancer diagnosis and...

Cortical inhibition function is associated with baseline suicidal symptoms and post-ketamine suicidal symptom reduction among patients with treatment-resistant depression and strong suicidal ideation.

Journal of Psychiatric Research March 1, 2023 Mu-Hong Chen, T. Su, Li-Fen Chen et al.

BACKGROUND Whether cortical excitation and inhibition functions differ between patients with treatment-resistant depression (TRD) and strong suicidal ideation (SI) and healthy subjects and whether 0.5 mg/kg ketamine infusion can modulate cortical excitation and inhibition functions among patients with TRD-SI remain unclear. METHODS A total of 29 patients with TRD-SI and 35 age- and sex-matched...

Adjunctive short- and long-term combination treatment of esketamine and VNS in difficult to treat depression (DTD)

European Psychiatry March 1, 2023 Erhan Kavakbasi, Bernhard T Baune

IntroductionNMDA-Receptor antagonists have rapid antidepressant and antisuicidal properties. However, the antidepressant effect is short lasting raising the question of best maintenance strategy, which is unanswered so far. Invasive vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) as a treatment option for refractory and chronic major depression was shown to reduce the need of maintenance treatment sessions in...

Effect of pre-administration of esketamine intraoperatively on postpartum depression after cesarean section: A randomized, double-blinded controlled trial.

Esketamine for treatment‑resistant depression: A review of clinical evidence (Review).

Experimental and therapeutic medicine March 2023 Octavian Vasiliu

Treatment-resistant depression (TRD) is a challenge for psychiatrists, even after more than seven decades since the first antidepressants were used in clinical practice. Non-monoaminergic-based drugs with antidepressant properties have been developed, but to date, only esketamine and brexanolone have been approved for TRD and postpartum depression, respectively. A narrative review on the...

Esketamine nasal spray shows higher remission and response rates over 32 weeks of treatment compared with quetiapine extended-release in patients with treatment resistant depression: Results from ESCAPE-TRD, a randomised, phase IIIb clinical trial

PubMed Central March 1, 2023

INTRODUCTION: Treatment resistant depression (TRD) is estimated to affect 10–30% of patients with major depressive disorder (Al‑Harbi et al. Patient Prefer Adherence 2012; 6 369–88). Esketamine nasal spray (NS), in combination with a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) or serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI), increases remission and response rates in patients with TRD...

Improvement of depressive symptoms, after a suicide attempt, with dextromethorphan/bupropion combination treatment in a patient with treatment-resistant depression and psychiatric comorbidities.

Clinical Case Reports March 1, 2023 Bruno Pedraz-Petrozzi, Michael Deuschle, Maria Gilles

We admitted a 42-year-old patient with severe treatment-resistant depression and with psychiatric comorbidities. The patient attempted suicide 5 weeks after admission. Subsequently, we initiated dextromethorphan/bupropion based on prior evidence. As a result, the patient demonstrated an improvement in mood symptoms and a reduction in suicide risk, leading to her discharge.

Combinations of dextromethorphan for the treatment of mood disorders - a review of the evidence.

Expert Review of Neurotherapeutics March 1, 2023 Zamfira Parincu, Dan V. Iosifescu

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is one of the leading causes of disability worldwide. However, many patients do not achieve an adequate clinical improvement with pharmacotherapies targeting monoamine receptors, and the onset of therapeutic benefit typically lags by 4-6 weeks. There is a significant need for mechanistically novel treatments with more rapid efficacy. Combinations of...
