The study of consciousness has advanced with promising theories and experimental data, but new challenges persist. A key debate is whether visual consciousness involves the seeing itself (phenomenal consciousness, or P-consciousness) or the knowledge that you see (cognitive access, or A-consciousness), and this controversy appears deadlocked. Additionally, many theories imply panpsychism—the idea that all beings or even lifeless objects have conscious experience—raising the question of whether this should be accepted or whether missing ingredients are needed to set a lower bound on conscious beings. The text discusses these challenges and offers potential solutions.
A roadmap for studying conscious auditory perception is outlined, emphasizing how conscious experience emerges in complex auditory scenes. The authors argue that most research on the neural basis of conscious perception has come from vision, raising questions about generalizability. They discuss the functional role of the auditory system, identify phenomena that a theory of conscious auditory perception must explain, survey candidate neural correlates from existing literature, and consider implications for a general theory of conscious perception. Outstanding questions and recommended approaches and techniques for addressing them are also presented.
The distributed adaptive control theory of consciousness (DACtoc) proposes that consciousness evolved during the Cambrian period to help agents deal with hidden states of the world, enabling stable multi-agent environments. It functions as an autonomous virtualization memory that serializes and unifies parallel subconscious simulations of hidden states—largely due to other agents and the self—to extract norms, which are then projected as value onto control systems driving action. This functional hypothesis is mapped onto brainstem, midbrain, thalamo-cortical, and cortico-cortical systems. The theory predicts that normative bootstrapping of conscious agents requires an intentionality prior, and suggests human consciousness represents an ultimate evolutionary transition toward autonomy from evolutionary priors.
Visual consciousness is often defined by reports like 'I saw the stimulus,' but the origin of the 'I' remains unexplained. To address the subjective dimension of perceptual experience, a concept called the neural subjective frame is introduced. This frame is based on constantly updated neural maps of the body's internal state, creating a neural reference point for first-person experience. It is proposed to be rooted in neural representations of visceral information transmitted via multiple pathways to brain regions including the posterior insula, ventral anterior cingulate cortex, amygdala, and somatosensory cortex. Existing evidence shows that external stimulus processing can interact with visceral function.
