Meditation Programs for Psychological Stress and Well-being

A meta-analysis of 47 randomized clinical trials with 3,515 participants found that mindfulness meditation programs produce small to moderate reductions in anxiety, depression, and pain compared to placebo controls. At 8 weeks, effect sizes were 0.38 for anxiety, 0.30 for depression, and 0.33 for pain; benefits for anxiety and depression persisted at 3–6 months. Evidence for improved stress, distress, and mental health-related quality of life was low, and there was insufficient or no evidence that meditation improves positive mood, attention, substance use, eating habits, sleep, or weight. Meditation programs were not superior to active treatments such as drugs, exercise, or other behavioral therapies.

Mindfulness instruction for community-hospital physicians for burnout and patient care: A pilot study

An eight-week Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program offered to 26 clinicians at a community hospital was feasible and associated with significant reductions in personal burnout, client-related burnout, and perceived stress, along with increased mindfulness. Most participants reported improved self-care (84%), patient care (68%), patient communication (50%), and quality and safety of patient care (29%). Qualitative themes included greater emotional availability, shared decision making with patients, and job satisfaction. The findings suggest that MBSR may help reduce clinician burnout and improve perceived patient care and safety.

Feasibility and acceptability of using a meditation app in adults with rheumatic disease.

A pilot study tested whether adults with rheumatic diseases would use a smartphone meditation app (Calm) for at least five minutes daily over 30 days. Of 35 mostly female, well-educated participants who began, 18 completed the full study. Those who finished had higher baseline stress, anxiety, pain, and global disease scores than those who dropped out. Completers averaged 283 total minutes of app use and showed significant improvement in fatigue, with trends toward less stress, anxiety, sleep disturbance, and pain. The authors conclude that app-based meditation is a feasible non-drug option for improving quality of life and fatigue, but more rigorous research is needed.

The self-efficacy for regular meditation practice scale (SERMS): Development and psychometric validation

A new scale, the Self-Efficacy for Regular Meditation Practice Scale (SERMS), was developed to measure confidence in one's ability to meditate regularly and secure the psychological, social, and structural supports needed. Online survey data were collected at baseline and one-week follow-up. Exploratory factor analysis (n = 249) and confirmatory factor analysis (n = 249) revealed a three-factor structure: self-efficacy to benefit from meditation, persist in meditation, and obtain teacher and community support. Validity and test-retest reliability coefficients indicated the SERMS is a promising measure for studying meditation behavior adoption.

Modified-Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction as a Treatment for Cognitive Recovery in Patients with Minor Stroke: a Randomized Controlled Pilot Study.

An 8-week online modified Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) course modestly improved cognitive performance in patients recovering from minor stroke, particularly in processing speed, executive function, and global cognition, compared to a traditional stroke support group. Thirty patients with subacute minor stroke were randomized to either intervention. Both groups showed increased cognitive scores three months post-stroke, but the MBSR group had moderately greater improvements. Engagement was low in both groups and did not correlate with better outcomes. The authors suggest MBSR may be more effective in the chronic recovery stage when patients can participate more fully.

At 8 weeks, anxiety improved with an effect size of 0.38 and depression with 0.30; these benefits persisted at 3–6 months with effect sizes of 0.22 and 0.23 respectively. Pain showed an effect size of 0.33. Evidence for stress/distress and mental health-related quality of life was low. Meditation programs showed no effect or insufficient evidence for positive mood, attention, substance use, eating habits, sleep, and weight, and were not better than drugs, exercise, or other behavioral therapies.
