Integrated Information Theory, Pseudoscience, and Mainstream Theories of Consciousness: A Call for 'The Science We Need'

PsyArXiv September 29, 2023 Nicholas Martin Rosseinsky preprint

A recent letter associates IIT with the (undefined!) term 'pseudoscience'. A striking and unarguable definition of pseudoscience here shows it applies to all mainstream theories of consciousness. But this isn't a field-destructive critique: it's a call to begin the beautiful, pristine, science that lies beyond current pseudoscientific dogma.

N-Theory: A Falsifiable, Consistent, Scientific, Theory-of-Consciousness

June 10, 2022 Nicholas Martin Rosseinsky 2 citations preprint

The central problem for the currently-mainstream 'science' of consciousness is not the Hard Problem: it's that there are literally *no* falsifiable, consistent, candidate theories! (This problem continues, despite the ongoing high-profile outpouring of papers and books.) Lack of falsifiability derives from the mainstream's adoption of a dynamically-orthodox setting. (See 'True Consciousness...

True Consciousness Science Requires Strongly Dynamically-Unorthodox Physics

August 18, 2021 Nicholas Martin Rosseinsky 2 citations preprint

Whether there can be a science of consciousness is both of the utmost importance, and a matter of intense current debate in the field. Recently, two major papers seemed to reach dramatically conflicting conclusions, one denying scientific method currently exists in the field, the other promoting a way to ‘make the hard problem easier’. Here I apply uncontroversial mathematical physics together...

Scientifically-Flawed Bypass of the Hard Problem Doesn’t Make It ‘Easier’!

PsyArXiv August 12, 2021 Nicholas Martin Rosseinsky preprint

In the flagship journal Science, Melloni et al. recently claimed to offer a way of making the ‘hard problem’ of consciousness easier. In fact, in their chosen analytical setting, the hard problem is impossible, and their claims simply further muddy the already-opaque waters in the mainstream field of conscious-experiential science.

Mind the Gap: A Seven-Question Field-Map Highlights Consciousness Science’s Critical, Neglected, Terrain

PsyArXiv February 8, 2019 Nicholas Martin Rosseinsky preprint

I identify seven crucial questions for individual theories-of-consciousness, and apply them to five leading approaches (IIT, GNW, PC, HoT and Orch-OR), highlighting similarities and differences. Under simple quantification, the median score is 1.5/7 (or about 20%!), and the field-leader is Orch-OR (but still scoring only 2.5/7!). Beyond these introductory illustrations, the seven-question...

The Hard Problem, Revisited: Adversarial Collaboration Can’t Overcome Mainstream Consciousness Science’s Axiomatic Assumption that ‘0 = 1’

Nicholas Martin Rosseinsky preprint

Biology and psychology have replication issues. 'Adversarial collaboration', where advocates of competing hypotheses cooperate on experiments, may help resolve these - if sub-optimal design is their source! But in mainstream consciousness science, the real origin of protracted problems is an inherently-contradictory, '0 = 1', assumption, in current field-foundations. Here, a mathematical-system...

'Effing Consciousness' - Or, How to Use New Symbols to Get Qualia Into the Hard Sciences

Nicholas Martin Rosseinsky preprint

Opinions differ - wildly - about the scientific study of subjective conscious experience. To start to shed some light on this contested issue, this Chapter offers an accessible introduction to the application of new qualia-valued symbols. I explain how these 'angle-bracket' symbols can mediate a conflict between 'no science of consciousness' physicists, the 'conscious experience is ineffable'...

The 'Real Problem' of Consciousness Requires New Physics

Nicholas Martin Rosseinsky preprint

Whether or not there can be a science of consciousness is a matter of great interest, not only in the field itself, but for science as a whole: conscious experience is the only reality-feature with which humankind has direct contact. This article resolves longstanding controversies, dating back to the infamous ‘hard problem’, subsequently reformulated as a more scientifically-tractable ‘real...
