Mind the Gap: A Seven-Question Field-Map Highlights Consciousness Science’s Critical, Neglected, Terrain

This paper argues that consciousness science has neglected critical questions about the nature and distribution of conscious experience. The authors propose a seven-question field-map designed to highlight these gaps, covering issues such as the relationship between consciousness and brain activity, the possibility of consciousness in non-human animals and artificial systems, and the role of subjective experience in scientific explanation. The map is intended to guide future research by identifying underexplored terrain and encouraging a broader, more systematic investigation of consciousness beyond current mainstream approaches.
