There Is an 'Unconscious,' but It May Well Be Conscious.

Europe’s Journal of Psychology August 1, 2017 Bernardo Kastrup

Depth psychology finds empirical validation today in a variety of observations that suggest the presence of causally effective mental processes outside conscious experience. I submit that this is due to misinterpretation of the observations: the subset of consciousness called "meta-consciousness" in the literature is often mistaken for consciousness proper, thereby artificially creating space...

Expectation creates something out of nothing: The role of attention in iconic memory reconsidered.

Consciousness and Cognition August 1, 2017 Jaan Aru, Talis Bachmann 42 citations

Conscious experience is modulated by attention and expectation, yet is believed to be independent of attention. The experiments on iconic memory (IM) are usually taken as support for this claim. However, a recent experiment demonstrated that when attention is diverted away from the IM letter display subjects fail to see the absence of IM letters. Here we contribute to the ongoing debate by...

Locomotor and discriminative stimulus effects of four novel hallucinogens in rodents.

Behavioural Pharmacology August 1, 2017 Michael B. Gatch, Sean B. Dolan, Michael J. Forster 36 citations

There has been increasing use of novel synthetic hallucinogenic compounds, 2-(4-bromo-2,5-dimethoxyphenyl)-N-(2-methoxybenzyl)ethanamine hydrochloride (25B-NBOMe), 2-(4-chloro-2,5-dimethoxyphenyl)-N-(2-methoxybenzyl)ethanamine hydrochloride (25C-NBOMe), 2-(4-iodo-2,5-dimethoxyphenyl)-N-(2-methoxybenzyl)ethanamine hydrochloride (25I-NBOMe), and N,N-diallyl-5-methoxy tryptamine (5-MeO-DALT),...

The disconnect between the science on cannabis and public health campaigns

Addiction July 31, 2017 Christine L. Miller 2 citations

The review of cannabis-induced psychosis by Ian Hamilton in Addiction 1 raised key issues that warrant further exploration. In focusing upon the literature up to the turn of the 21st century, the author omitted the subsequent explosion of scientific inquiry into a causal relationship between cannabis use and chronic psychotic disorders. The author pointed towards one type of relevant research,...

An Analytical study of the concept of perception in Theravada Buddhist Philosophy

Journal of MCU Peace Studies July 30, 2017 Sorawit Wongsaard

This research found that the concept of perception in Theravada Buddhist Philosophy, which is a perception that one employs in approaching one’s externality and internality that came into contact that is categorized in three main areas, namely external objects, internal organs, and the mind or consciousness; these three are the areas in which perception is based upon. These are the tools of...

Pharmacokinetics and Bioavailability of Inhaled Esketamine in Healthy Volunteers

Anesthesiology July 30, 2017 Kelly Jonkman, Andreas Duma, Erik Olofsen et al. 56 citations

BACKGROUND: Esketamine is traditionally administered via intravenous or intramuscular routes. In this study we developed a pharmacokinetic model of inhalation of nebulized esketamine with special emphasis on pulmonary absorption and bioavailability. METHODS: Three increasing doses of inhaled esketamine (dose escalation from 25 to 100 mg) were applied followed by a single intravenous dose (20...

Semisynthesis and Kappa-Opioid Receptor Activity of Derivatives of Columbin, a Furanolactone Diterpene.

Journal of Natural Products July 28, 2017 Anil Yilmaz, Rachel Saylor Crowley, Alexander M. Sherwood et al.

Columbin (1) is a furanolactone diterpene isolated from the roots of Jateorhiza and Tinospora species. These species generally grow in Asia and Africa and have been used in folk medicine for their apparent analgesic and antipyretic activities. Columbin (1) is of particular interest due to its structural similarity to the known kappa-opioid receptor (KOR) agonist salvinorin A. Given that the KOR...

Behavioral Changes Over Time Following Ayahuasca Exposure in Zebrafish

Frontiers in Behavioral Neuroscience July 28, 2017 Robson Savoldi, Daniel Polari, Jaquelinne Pinheiro‐da‐silva et al. 38 citations

The combined infusion of Banisteriopsis caapi stem and Psychotria viridis leaves, known as ayahuasca, has been used for centuries by indigenous tribes. The infusion is rich in N, N-dimethyltryptamine (DMT) and monoamine oxidase inhibitors, with properties similar to those of serotonin. Despite substantial progress in the development of new drugs to treat anxiety and depression, current...

Inhibition of serotonin transporters disrupts the enhancement of fear memory extinction by 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA)

Psychopharmacology July 24, 2017 Matthew B Young, Seth D. Norrholm, Lara M. Khoury et al. 103 citations

We validate enhancement of fear memory extinction by MDMA in a translational behavioral model, and reveal the importance of 5-HTT and 5-HT2A receptors to this effect. These observations support future clinical research of MDMA as an adjunct to exposure therapy, and provide important pharmacological considerations for clinical use in a population frequently treated with 5-HTT inhibitors.

Associations between adolescent cannabis use and neuropsychological decline: a longitudinal co‐twin control study

Addiction July 22, 2017 Madeline H. Meier, Avshalom Caspi, Andrea Danese et al. 129 citations

AIMS: This study tested whether adolescents who used cannabis or met criteria for cannabis dependence showed neuropsychological impairment prior to cannabis initiation and neuropsychological decline from before to after cannabis initiation. DESIGN: A longitudinal co-twin control study. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: Participants were 1989 twins from the Environmental Risk (E-Risk) Longitudinal Twin...
