Short-Term Stability and Night-to-Night Variability of Sleep Parameters in Nightmares Comorbid with Chronic Insomnia Disorder Across Multiple Nights of Polysomnography.

Sleep February 1, 2024 C. Paquet, K. Lenker, S. Calhoun et al.

STUDY OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study was to examine the degree of short-term stability of polysomnographic (PSG) measured sleep parameters and the overall differences between individuals with comorbid nightmares and insomnia compared to those with chronic insomnia disorder alone or good sleeping controls across four nights in the sleep lab. METHODS A total of 142 good sleeping controls,...

A Dynamic Foundation: Aberrations of Sleep Architecture and Its Association With Clinical and Sub-clinical Psychopathology.

Cureus February 1, 2024 Richard C. Todd

This investigation centered on the hypnagogic and hypnopompic wake-sleep/sleep-wake transition states and the associated exploration of hypnagogic and hypnopompic experiences (HHEs), and sleep paralysis (SP) on psychiatric exacerbation and paradoxical masking. The study aims to discern causality by examining how these sleep-related experiences may contribute to the emergence or exacerbation of...

Effects of 7-minute practices of breathing and meditation on stress reduction.

PsyCh Journal February 1, 2024 Chunxia Sun, Jiajin Tong, Xin Qi et al. 2 citations

We compared the effects of 7-min practices of breathing and meditation on perceived stress reduction and related affective outcomes (active emotion, serenity, anxiety, and fatigue) during micro-breaks. Undergraduates from two classes (N = 59) completed the 7-point online surveys. Results supported the effects of both practices.

Magnesium-ibogaine therapy in veterans with traumatic brain injuries.

Nature Medicine February 1, 2024 Kirsten Cherian, Jackob N. Keynan, Lauren Anker et al. 66 citations

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a leading cause of disability. Sequelae can include functional impairments and psychiatric syndromes such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression and anxiety. Special Operations Forces (SOF) veterans (SOVs) may be at an elevated risk for these complications, leading some to seek underexplored treatment alternatives such as the oneirogen ibogaine, a...

Unique Effects of (R)-Ketamine Compared to (S)-Ketamine on EEG Theta Power in Rats.

Pharmaceuticals February 1, 2024 Dóra Pothorszki, Szabolcs Koncz, Dóra Török et al. 7 citations

Differences in the pharmacological effects of (S)-ketamine and (R)-ketamine are at the focus of research. Clinical data and our rat studies confirmed the antidepressant effect of (S)- but not (R)-ketamine, with similar differences in quantitative electroencephalogram (EEG) and sleep effects. In contrast, studies mainly on mice showed some stronger, preferable effects of (R)-ketamine. EEG theta...

Vipassana Effects on Interpersonal Functioning

ScienceOpen Preprints January 31, 2024 Brett Ruehland preprint

Over the last decade, psychological researchers have begun exploring the effects of Vipassana, a meditation practice based on teachings expounded in the earliest Buddhist texts, dating back more than two-and-a-half millennia (Bodhi, 2005). Courses to learn the technique are widely available, with hundreds of thousands of participants attending residential courses at Vipassana meditation centres...

Efficacy of Yoga-meditation in Managing Mental Stress of Generation Z Pupils

International Research Journal of Ayurveda & Yoga January 31, 2024 Ramala Sarma

Introduction: Research on yoga meditation has shown the effectiveness of meditation in alleviating stress and anxiety. However, its efficacy on Generation Z (Gen Z) pupils, who mostly experience mental stress, remains unknown in many cases. As at the deep root of their stress lies their inability to look at things as they are, meditative practice, and non-judgmental awareness, are useful for...

Nontargeted metabolomic insights into the behavioral effects of 5-MeO-MiPT in zebrafish (Danio rerio)

Ecotoxicology and Environmental Safety January 31, 2024 Sen Zhao, Jinyuan Chen, Chenhao Zhong et al. 3 citations

5-Methoxy-N-methyl-N-isopropyltryptamine (5-MeO-MiPT) is a novel psychoactive substance exhibiting a tryptamine structure. Despite its increasing prevalence, the environmental impact of 5-MeO-MiPT remains unexplored. Our prior investigation revealed that 5-MeO-MiPT induced inhibited spontaneous movement and prompted anxiety-like behavior in adult zebrafish-a validated toxicological model. To...

Web-Based Mindfulness Meditation as an Adjunct to Internet-Delivered Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Public Safety Personnel: Mixed Methods Feasibility Evaluation Study.

JMIR Formative Research January 30, 2024 Caeleigh A Landry, Hugh C Mccall, Janine D Beahm et al. 7 citations

Public safety personnel (PSP) are individuals who work to ensure the safety and security of communities (eg, correctional workers, firefighters, paramedics, and police officers). PSP have a high risk of developing mental disorders and face unique barriers to traditional mental health treatments. The PSP Wellbeing Course is a transdiagnostic, internet-delivered cognitive behavioral therapy...
