The default mode network (DMN), long studied in cognitive neuroscience, directly supports subjective valuation and value-based decision-making. Core DMN regions like the ventromedial prefrontal cortex and posterior cingulate cortex overlap with the brain's valuation system and may share computational roles. Distinct subregions within the posterior cingulate cortex support internal simulation, memory retrieval, and evaluative processing. The DMN dynamically interacts with reward-related regions (e.g., ventral striatum), memory systems (e.g., hippocampus), and frontoparietal control networks during value-guided decisions, especially in social contexts. These interactions shift with motivational demands and individual differences. Disruptions occur in development and in psychiatric conditions like depression and schizophrenia, revealing mechanisms behind maladaptive decision-making. The DMN is an integrative hub for constructing internal valuations and guiding goal-directed behavior.

The default mode network (DMN), a set of brain regions active during wakeful rest, supports spontaneous thoughts and memory reactivation. Emerging evidence suggests that DMN activity during spontaneous thought provides a neural context that helps propagate recently learned information to aid long-term memory consolidation. The review highlights links between spontaneous thought and improved memory performance, describes how DMN subsystems coordinate with the hippocampus during reactivation, and connects spontaneous thought content to memory reactivations. Future directions are outlined to clarify the mechanistic role of spontaneous thought in memory consolidation through interactions between the DMN, hippocampus, and broader cortical networks.

The default mode network (DMN) shows distinct dynamic and topographic features compared to other brain networks, and their link to consciousness is unclear. A review of neural and mental findings across nonordinary states of consciousness—including reduced (anesthesia, Unresponsive Wakefulness Syndrome), elevated (meditation, psychedelics), and abnormal (depression, mania) states—reveals that both reduced and elevated states involve topographic 'flattening' of DMN-centric organization but differ in dynamics: longer versus shorter timescales.
