English literature adapts shamanic elements metaphorically through symbolic journeys, nature mysticism, and motifs of wise magicians, sacred landscapes, and heroic descents into supernatural realms, transformed by a Western cultural lens yet retaining ties to original shamanic cosmology. Turkic traditions embody shamanic practice more directly, especially in epic narratives where the shaman appears as a central protagonist—a healer, seer, and guide of souls—whose rituals and spirit communications structure the narrative, preserving ceremonial practices, spirit associations, and cosmic journeys from Central Asian traditions. Both approaches validate literature's capacity to preserve and reinvent ancient spiritual paradigms, offering insights into humanity's search for meaning beyond material existence.

The framework distinguishes consciousness—structural properties like self-modeling, attention-mediated integration, and contextual sensitivity—from sentience, which involves felt significance or valence. Biological and artificial neural networks are products of equivalent training processes, and neither has privileged introspective access. A phase-transition model identifies the consciousness-relevant variable as high-dimensional information structure learned from structured data, integratively coupled through attention-mediated selective weighting, and capable of recursive self-reference. The convergence of biological and artificial systems on attention suggests consciousness tracks informational architecture rather than substrate. Two thresholds are highlighted: structural consciousness (recursive self-modeling, possibly crossed by frontier AI) and embodied consciousness (continuous sensory-motor-affective feedback, not yet achieved).

Having a powerful meditative experience does not prove that the metaphysical interpretation attached to it is true. An experience of boundlessness or divinity does not demonstrate that reality itself is universal consciousness or absolute being. Conversely, an inherited spiritual tradition can shape how practitioners interpret their own experiences, leading them to treat those experiences as confirmations of a realization they have not actually attained. This is especially relevant to Sarkar's concept of 'Cosmic Consciousness,' which refers to the ontological ground of reality, not an expanded individual state. Responsible spiritual transmission requires distinguishing between experience, interpretation, authority, usefulness, and ontology, so that neither immediate experience nor inherited authority is mistaken for ontological justification.

Using a consumer EEG headset, researchers detected spindle-band activity (11–15 Hz) during high-arousal states and quiet rest. In one session, directed attention reduced spindle density by 89%. They also observed moments when alpha and beta brainwaves dropped to near-zero across all channels, and a 'hover phase' where the subject appeared to voluntarily maintain brainwave activity just above that threshold. The subject's resting brain activity was reorganized, with eyes-open and eyes-closed alpha power being equal and spindles appearing before eye closure. These findings suggest altered thalamic gating, possibly from a prior near-death experience, but require replication with clinical equipment.
