The Strange Case of Ermine de Reims

Digital philology 2016 Gail Orgelfinger

The Strange Case of Ermine de Reims Gail Orgelfinger A Medieval Woman Between Demons and Saints. By Renate Blumenfeld-Kosinski. Philadelphia: University of Pennsylvania Press, 2015. When demons began to torment her in late 1395, Ermine was a middle-aged (48) widow who had moved to Reims from the countryside a decade earlier with her elderly husband in order to find work. About two years after...

The Hypothesis of Hyperia from the Perspective of Neuronal Plasticity

Open Journal of Medical Psychology 2016 Javier Álvarez-Rodríguez

We analyze certain mental automatisms appearing in the consciousness with phenomenological features of simple partial seizures (SPSs). We propose to include all these phenomena into a cognitive function to which we term hyperia. In this paper, we analyze the similarities between the nature of this cognitive function and the mechanisms used by our brain to elicit neuronal plasticity.

Dissociazione creativa: il “trip” dell’artista

AMS Acta 2016 Giuseppe Galetta

Mind outside Brain: a radically non-dualist foundation for distributed cognition

VUBIR 2016 Francis Heylighen, Shima Beigi 11 citations

We approach the problem of the extended mind from a radically non-dualist perspective. The separation between mind and matter is an artefact of the outdated mechanistic worldview, which leaves no room for mental phenomena such as agency, intentionality, or feeling. We propose to replace it by an action ontology, which conceives mind and matter as aspects of the same network of processes. By...

Neural Mechanisms of Bodily Self-Consciousness and the Experience of Presence in Virtual Reality

2016 Bruno Herbelin, R. Salomon, Andrea Serino et al.

Recent neuroscience research emphasizes the embodied origins of the experience of the self. This chapter shows that further advances in the understanding of the phenomenon of VR-induced presence might be achieved in connection with advances in the understanding of the brain mechanisms of bodily self-consciousness. By reviewing the neural mechanisms that make the virtual reality experience...

Does Yoga Induce Metaphysical Hallucinations?: Interdisciplinarity at the Edge: Comments on Evan Thompson’s Waking, Dreaming, Being

Philosophy East and West 2016 Owen Flanagan

Does Yoga Induce Metaphysical Hallucinations?Interdisciplinarity at the Edge: Comments on Evan Thompson’s Waking, Dreaming, Being Owen Flanagan (bio) Waking, Dreaming, Being is an unusual book in many ways. I mention two. First, in some ways it is a memoir. Few philosophers started as a child doing the sort of philosophy that they did as a grown-up. Evan did. Evan grew up in the intellectually...

Learning New Sensorimotor Contingencies: Effects of Long-Term Use of Sensory Augmentation on the Brain and Conscious Perception.

PLoS One 2016 Sabine U. König, Frank Schumann, Johannes Keyser et al.

Theories of embodied cognition propose that perception is shaped by sensory stimuli and by the actions of the organism. Following sensorimotor contingency theory, the mastery of lawful relations between own behavior and resulting changes in sensory signals, called sensorimotor contingencies, is constitutive of conscious perception. Sensorimotor contingency theory predicts that, after training,...

Integrated Information and State Differentiation.

Frontiers in Psychology 2016 William Marshall, Jaime Gomez-Ramirez, Giulio Tononi

Integrated information (Φ) is a measure of the cause-effect power of a physical system. This paper investigates the relationship between Φ as defined in Integrated Information Theory and state differentiation ([Formula: see text]), the number of, and difference between potential system states. Here we provide theoretical justification of the relationship between Φ and [Formula: see text], then...

A new emerging problem in pediatric emergency units: Synthetic cannabinoids.

Turkish Journal of Pediatrics 2016 Nükhet Aladağ-Çiftdemir, İlay Yücel, Rıdvan Duran et al.

Synthetic cannabinoids or synthetic marijuana derivatives known as "Bonzai" in Turkey are addictive substances that affect the brain and have serious side effects. In recent years, the use of these substances has also been increasing in our country as well as all over the world. These substances present with various names and brands, the most common names in Turkey are "Bonzai" and "Jamaika"....

The Complex Interplay Between Multisensory Integration and Perceptual Awareness

Multisensory Research 2016 Ophelia Deroy, Nathan Faivre, Claudia Lunghi et al. 73 citations

widespread neural interactions. Yet the complex interdependencies between multisensory integration and perceptual awareness, or consciousness, remain to be defined. While perceptual awareness has traditionally been studied in a single sense, in recent years we have witnessed a surge of interest in the role of multisensory integration in perceptual awareness. Based on a recent IMRF symposium on...
