Abstract Variations in interoceptive signals from the baroreceptors (BRs) across the cardiac and respiratory cycle can modulate cortical excitability and so affect awareness. It remains debated at what stages of processing they affect awareness-related event-related potentials (ERPs) in different sensory modalities. We investigated the influence of the cardiac (systole/diastole) and the...

Summary: Establishing Qualia Structure Paradigm.?Do subjective conscious experience and objective brain matters belong to completely different worlds? How are qualia, the contents of consciousness, related to the brain? The question of consciousness and the brain is not only of scientific interest, but it is also directly related to the problems associated with difficulties in understanding...

The issue of the relation between the mind and the brain is known as one of the most discussed problem of the philosophy of mind. The recent development of neuroscience contributed significantly to animate the discussion on this subject. This article is one voice in this discussion. It contains a critical analysis of some arguments in favor of the theory which claims that the mind is identical...

The article examines the modern discourse on the problem of consciousness in the context of theories about the biological and physical basis of consciousness. In order to consider problematic issues of consciousness, two theoretical approaches to consciousness are analyzed: Michael Graziano's attention schema theory and Bernard Baars' global workspace theory. By describing the key...

Physical systems are characterized by their structure and dynamics. But the physical laws only express relations, and their symmetries allow any possible relational structure to be also possible in a different parametrization or basis of the state space. If observers were reducible to their structure, observer-like structures from different parametrizations would identify differently the...

Consciousness is comprised of arousal (i.e., wakefulness) and awareness. Substantial progress has been made in mapping the cortical networks that modulate awareness in the human brain, but knowledge about the subcortical networks that sustain arousal is lacking. We integrated data from ex vivo diffusion MRI, immunohistochemistry, and in vivo 7 Tesla functional MRI to map the connectivity of a...

This chapter sets out how the practice of a Buddhism-informed therapy and the themes presented in the book have necessitated the author to reflect upon the nature of self, its composite parts, and the experiences of them. She invites the reader to ponder “how does ‘self’ incorporate the aspects of spirit and soul?” and other dichotomies such as self and Self, Self and non-self. Theories and...

The capacity to reflect on oneself is of utmost importance to human personhood. To elaborate on the manifold forms of reflective self-consciousness, this article endorses a multidimensional conception of self, according to which self-reflection essentially involves an experiential dimension. While classical analyses of reflective self-consciousness have highlighted unique epistemic and...
