Survey to Assess Interest in a Mindfulness Intervention at a Midwifery and Women's Health Clinic.

Holistic Nursing Practice 2018 Alyson Haslam, Trina Salm Ward, Sara Wagner Robb

We conducted a voluntary survey among ethnically and socioeconomically diverse women. About half of the respondents reported experiencing at least one health issue; over half were interested in attending a mindfulness class to reduce stress. Our study suggests interest in participating in a mindfulness intervention, primarily among those with more health issues.

Effects of Mindfulness Training on Sleep Problems in Patients With Fibromyalgia.

Frontiers in Psychology 2018 Alberto Amutio, Clemente Franco, Laura C Sánchez-sánchez et al.

Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is a complex psychosomatic pain condition. In addition to generalized pain and various cognitive difficulties, new FMS diagnostic criteria acknowledge fatigue and sleep problems as core aspects of this condition. Indeed, poor sleep quality has been found to be a significant predictor of pain, fatigue, and maladaptive social functioning in this patient group. While...

International Journal of Yoga 2018 Camila Ferreira-Vorkapic, Claudio Joaquim Borba-Pinheiro, Murilo Marchioro et al.

World statistics for the prevalence of anxiety and mood disorders shows that a great number of individuals will experience some type of anxiety or mood disorder at some point in their lifetime. Mind-body interventions such as Hatha Yoga and seated meditation have been used as a form of self-help therapy and it is especially useful for challenging occupations such as teachers and professors. In...

Mindfulness-Based Interventions for Young Offenders: a Scoping Review.

Mindfulness 2018 Sharon Simpson, Stewart W Mercer, Robert Simpson et al.

Youth offending is a problem worldwide. Young people in the criminal justice system have frequently experienced adverse childhood circumstances, mental health problems, difficulties regulating emotions and poor quality of life. Mindfulness-based interventions can help people manage problems resulting from these experiences, but their usefulness for youth offending populations is not clear. This...

Mindfulness meditation in the treatment of substance use disorders and preventing future relapse: neurocognitive mechanisms and clinical implications.

Substance Abuse and Rehabilitation 2018 Sarah E. Priddy, Matthew O Howard, Adam W. Hanley et al.

Substance use disorders (SUDs) are a pervasive public health problem with deleterious consequences for individuals, families, and society. Furthermore, SUD intervention is complicated by the continuous possibility of relapse. Despite decades of research, SUD relapse rates remain high, underscoring the need for more effective treatments. Scientific findings indicate that SUDs are driven by...

Management of myofascial pain dysfunction syndrome with meditation and yoga: Healing through natural therapy.

National journal of maxillofacial surgery 2018 Abdul Ahad Khan, Anchal Srivastava, Deepak Passi et al.

The SCD-Well randomized controlled trial: Effects of a mindfulness-based intervention versus health education on mental health in patients with subjective cognitive decline (SCD).

Alzheimer's & Dementia 2018 Natalie L. Marchant, Thorsten Barnhofer, Olga Klimecki et al.

Subjectively experienced cognitive decline in older adults is an indicator of increased risk for dementia and is also associated with increased levels of anxiety symptoms. As anxiety is itself emerging as a risk factor for cognitive decline and dementia, the primary question of the present study is whether an 8-week mindfulness-based intervention can significantly reduce anxiety symptoms in...

The efficacy of a brief app-based mindfulness intervention on psychosocial outcomes in healthy adults: A pilot randomised controlled trial.

PLoS One 2018 Louise Champion, Marcos Economides, Chris Chandler

Previous evidence suggests that mindfulness training may improve aspects of psychosocial well-being. Whilst mindfulness is traditionally taught in person, consumers are increasingly turning to mindfulness-based smartphone apps as an alternative delivery medium for training. Despite this growing trend, few studies have explored whether mindfulness delivered via a smartphone app can enhance...

Modeling the Effects of Yoga on the Progression of Alzheimer's Disease in a Dish.

Cells, tissues, organs 2018 Adithy Hassan, Meghan Robinson, Stephanie M Willerth

Alzheimer's disease (AD) accounts for 80% of all dementia cases, making it the most common form of dementia. Aging serves as the main risk factor for AD, but early onset AD can also occur in individuals younger than 65 years. AD results from progressive neurodegeneration leading to dysfunctional synaptic transmission in the brain. The cascade hypothesis of AD states that amyloid precursor...

A case study exploration of school-based mindfulness instruction through the voices of middle school students with emotional and behavioral disabilities

2018 Danielle Marie Heeney, Constance Lyttle

The incorporation of mindfulness-based interventions and programs within the education field is a recent and developing context. The objective of this qualitative case...

Understanding changes in dyspnoea perception in obstructive lung disease after mindfulness training.

BMJ open respiratory research 2018 Alice Malpass, Gene S. Feder, James W Dodd

Dyspnoea has been defined as a 'subjective experience of breathing discomfort that consists of qualitatively distinct sensations that vary in intensity'. However, the majority of available dyspnoea measures treat it as a single entity and rely on quantitative methodology. We propose that qualitative research can enhance our understanding of dyspnoea, in particular, how perception varies so much...
