THE RECEPTION OF C.G. JUNG IN US DEATH AND DYING STUDIES

Phanês Journal For Jung History November 19, 2018 Jelena Martinovic 1 citation

C.G. Jung’s work has had a noticeable impact on conceptions about death and the dying experience, as well as on the therapeutic work methods that deal with anxiety, depression or terminal illnesses. This article analyses the reception of C.G. Jung’s work in the United States during the time period 1960-80. Well-being, Self-transcendence, and Resilience of Parental Caregivers of Children in Active Cancer Treatment: Where Do We Go From Here?

Cancer Nursing November 16, 2018 Jouhayna Bajjani-Gebara, P. Hinds, Kathleen C Insel et al.

BACKGROUND Childhood cancer profoundly impacts the well-being of many parental caregivers in the United States yearly. Empirical evidence is extensive for negative well-being and scarce for positive well-being in this population. OBJECTIVE Study aims were to (1) describe resilience, self-transcendence, and positive (general well-being) and negative well-being (depression and anxiety); (2)...

Antidepressant effect of ketamine requires opioid system activation

The Brown University Psychopharmacology Update November 14, 2018

A placebo‐controlled study in which participants with treatment‐resistant depression received naltrexone prior to infusion of ketamine found that the opioid antagonist blocked ketamine's antidepressant effects but not the dissociation induced by ketamine. These findings suggest that the antidepressant effect of ketamine requires activation of the opioid system.

Glutamatergic Neurotransmission: Pathway to Developing Novel Rapid-Acting Antidepressant Treatments

The International Journal of Neuropsychopharmacology November 14, 2018 Bashkim Kadriu, Laura Musazzi, Ioline D. Henter et al. 164 citations

The underlying neurobiological basis of major depressive disorder remains elusive due to the severity, complexity, and heterogeneity of the disorder. While the traditional monoaminergic hypothesis has largely fallen short in its ability to provide a complete picture of major depressive disorder, emerging preclinical and clinical findings suggest that dysfunctional glutamatergic...

Impacts of Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) on the Psychological and Functional Wellbeing of Patients with Bipolar Disorders

OBM Integrative and Complementary Medicine November 5, 2018 Nancy Poirier, Serge Beaulieu, Sybille Saury et al.

Background: This study investigated variations in psychic and somatic anxiety during and after completion of MBCT compared to baseline in patients diagnosed with BD. Secondary variables considered were sleep quality and quality of life, as well as depressive and manic symptoms. Methods: HAMD-29, HAMD-7 and YMRS were administered at baseline (n=34), and every two weeks until the end of the...

Mindfulness in severe and persistent mental illness: a systematic review.

International Journal of Psychiatry in Clinical Practice November 2018 Angela Potes, Gabriel Souza, Katerina Nikolitch et al.

This systematic review summarises the current state of research on mindfulness in SPMI, given the pressing need to provide alternative, scalable and cost-effective treatment modalities for patients with severe and persistent mental illness (SPMI). Articles included mindfulness-based interventions for SPMI. Excluded articles included qualitative studies, acceptance and compassion therapies, case...

TPA-023 attenuates subchronic phencyclidine-induced declarative and reversal learning deficits via GABAA receptor agonist mechanism: possible therapeutic target for cognitive deficit in schizophrenia.

Neuropsychopharmacology November 2018 Lakshmi Rajagopal, Mei Huang, Eric Michael et al.

GABAergic drugs are of interest for the treatment of anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, pain, cognitive impairment associated with schizophrenia (CIAS), and other neuropsychiatric disorders. Some evidence suggests that TPA-023, (7-(1,1-dimethylethyl)-6-(2-ethyl-2H-1,2,4-triazol-3-ylmethoxy)-3-(2-fluorophenyl)-1,2,4-triazolo[4,3-b] pyridazine), a GABAA α2,3 subtype-selective GABAA partial...

Lack of deuterium isotope effects in the antidepressant effects of (R)-ketamine in a chronic social defeat stress model.

Psychopharmacology November 2018 Kai Zhang, Hidetoh Toki, Yuko Fujita et al.

(R,S)-ketamine, an N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) antagonist, exhibits rapid and long-lasting antidepressant effects and anti-suicidal ideation in treatment-resistant patients with depression. However, the precise mechanisms underlying the antidepressant actions of (R,S)-ketamine are unknown. Although the previous report demonstrated the deuterium isotope effects in the antidepressant...

[Kanashibari Phenomenon as a Sleep Disorder: Recurrent Idiopathic Sleep Paralysis].

Brain and nerve = Shinkei kenkyu no shinpo November 2018 Kazuhiko Fukuda

The phenomenon called kanashibari in Japan is otherwise known as sleep paralysis and, is an established symptom of narcolepsy. Its physiological correlate is an unusual occurrence of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, i.e., sleep onset REM periods (SOREMPs). Various symptoms of the phenomenon are explained by the mechanisms of REM sleep. SOREMPs can be observed in various situations, which...

Adult Cellular Neuroadaptations Induced by Adolescent THC Exposure in Female Rats Are Rescued by Enhancing Anandamide Signaling.

The International Journal of Neuropsychopharmacology November 1, 2018 Bruna Cuccurazzu, Erica Zamberletti, Cristiano Nazzaro et al.

In rodent models, chronic exposure to cannabis' psychoactive ingredient, Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol, during adolescence leads to abnormal behavior in adulthood. In female rats, this maladaptive behavior is characterized by endophenotypes for depressive-like and psychotic-like disorders as well as cognitive deficits. We recently reported that most depressive-like behaviors triggered by adolescent...
