Spirit possession and healing among Chinese psychiatric patients.

Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica December 1, 1993 E H Kua, P H Chew, S M Ko 48 citations

This is a study of the illness behaviour of 100 Chinese psychiatric patients referred consecutively to the psychiatric unit of a general hospital in Singapore. More women than men felt that their illness was due to spirit possession; but belief in possession was not related to educational status. Thirty-six patients or their relatives had consulted a traditional healer before going to the...

Modulation of oral movements by intranigral 5-hydroxytryptamine receptor agonists in the rat.

Pharmacology, Biochemistry, and Behavior October 1993 U Liminga, A E Johnson, P E Andrén et al.

Bilateral infusion of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) agonists into the substantia nigra pars reticulata (SNr) of awake rats was shown to influence oral behavior. The 5-HT1A agonist (R)-8-hydroxy-2-(di-propylamino)- tetralin (8-OH-DPAT) (1.3-13 nmol on each side) produced a dose-dependent depression of vacuous chewing movements (VCMs) that lasted about 20 min. The (R)-8-OH-DPAT-induced depression of...

Mescaline-induced psychopathological, neuropsychological, and neurometabolic effects in normal subjects: experimental psychosis as a tool for psychiatric research.

Biological Psychiatry December 1, 1992 L. Hermle, M. Fünfgeld, G. Oepen et al. 185 citations

The psychological, neuropsychological, and neurometabolic effects of the hallucinogenic agent mescaline were investigated in 12 normal men who were volunteers. Mescaline produced an acute psychotic state 3 1/2-4 hr after drug intake, as measured by the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) and Paranoid Depression Scale (PDS). The Assessment of Altered States of Consciousness (APZ) questionnaire...

MDMA ("ecstasy") and panic disorder: induction by a single dose.

Biological Psychiatry November 15, 1992 Una D. Mccann, George A. Ricaurte

( +_ )3,4-Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) is a synthetic amphetamine analogue used recreationally by humans in the United States (Pcroutka 1987) and Western Europe (Anon 1992), and is thought by some to have potential utility as a psychotherapoutic adjunct (Grinspoon and Bakalar 1986). It is generally believed that MDMA acts via central monoamines, primariJy by inducing transmitter release...

Effectiveness of a meditation-based stress reduction program in the treatment of anxiety disorders

American Journal of Psychiatry July 1, 1992 1,950 citations

OBJECTIVE: This study was designed to determine the effectiveness of a group stress reduction program based on mindfulness meditation for patients with anxiety disorders. Assessments,...

Left hemispheric activation in depersonalization disorder: a case report.

Biological Psychiatry June 1, 1992 E. Hollander, J. Carrasco, L. Mullen et al.

Depersonalization disorder is classified in DSM-III-R (APA 1987) as a dissociative disorder characterized by altered perception or experience of the self. To date, there are no known reports of the neurobiological features of this disorder. We report clinical and biological correlates in a patient with depersonalization disorder previously unresponsive to a variety of anticonvulsant, monoamine...

Comparison of Dream Content of Depressed vs Nondepressed Dreamers

Psychological Reports April 1, 1992 Deirdre Barrett, Michael Loeffler

Dreams of 20 college women classified as depressed by scores on the Beck Depression Inventory were compared with those of 21 nondepressed college women. The depressed group recalled fewer dreams, had significantly shorter dream length, and displayed less anger in their dreams. They also had fewer characters in their dreams and especially fewer strangers.

Acute and prolonged effects of ibogaine on brain dopamine metabolism and morphine-induced locomotor activity in rats.

Brain Research March 13, 1992 Isabelle M Maisonneuve, K L Rossman, R W Keller et al. 86 citations

Ibogaine, an indolalkylamine, proposed for use in treating opiate and stimulant addiction, has been shown to modulate the dopaminergic system acutely and one day later. In the present study we sought to systematically determine the effects of ibogaine on the levels of dopamine (DA) and the dopamine metabolites 3,4 dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (DOPAC) and homovanillic acid (HVA) in tissue at...

Subjective and psychomotor effects of nitrous oxide in healthy volunteers.

Behavioural Pharmacology February 1, 1992 Cathleen S. Dohrn, J.L. Lichtor, R.S. Finn et al.

The effects of nitrous oxide at subanesthetic doses (0%, 10%, 20%, and 40% in oxygen) on mood and psychomotor performance were determined in a group of 12 healthy volunteers (six males and six females). A randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blinded, crossover trial of five experimental sessions was used. Effects were measured before, during and after a 30-min inhalation period of the agent,...
