Yogācāra Buddhism and Character Education: Focused on Thirty Verses on Consciousness Only by Vasubandhu

The Korean Society for the Study of Moral Education April 30, 2016 Mi-Jong Lee

What is Time?: Yogācāra-Buddhist Meditation on the Problem of the External World in the Cheng Weishi Lun

Asian Studies February 29, 2016 Jianjun Li 1 citation

Because it asserts that there is consciousness-only (vijñapti-mātratā), the difficulty in philosophically approaching the Yogācāra-Buddhist text Cheng weishi lun centers on the problem of the external world. This paper is based on a review by Lambert Schmithausen that, specifically with regard to the problem of the external world, questions Dan Lusthaus’s phenomenological investigation of the...

The Significance of “mushin”: The Essential Mind of Zen Buddhist Philosophy for Humans in a Contemporary World

Asian Studies February 29, 2016 Hisaki Hashi 6 citations

In our time of an information highway, digital networks are linked around the clock. Among various data many people are unconsciously depending on IT and digital medias with their body––but without any mind. The human origin, its creative thinking and acting, transmitting one idea to another for reforming and developing something new has been quite forgotten. Against this omnipresent phenomenon...

Zen meditation, Length of Telomeres, and the Role of Experiential Avoidance and Compassion

Mindfulness February 22, 2016 Marta Alda, Marta Puebla-Guedea, Baltasar Rodero et al. 87 citations

Mindfulness refers to an awareness that emerges by intentionally focusing on the present experience in a nonjudgmental or evaluative manner. Evidence regarding its efficacy has been increasing exponentially, and recent research suggests that the practice of meditation is associated with longer leukocyte telomere length. However, the psychological mechanisms underlying this potential...

MENGGOYANG AKAL, MENGGAPAI INTUISI Kajian Kritis atas Metode Koan dan Zazen di dalam Tradisi Zen

Jurnal Ledalero November 5, 2015 Reza A.A Wattimena

Zen is a way of understanding our true self as human before any concept is produced by the thinking mind. This true self can be perceived, when we let go all of forms of concepts and abstractions, and move to the realm of intuition. In this sense, intuition is direct experience of reality without the mediation of any kind of concepts or abstractions. The Zen tradition offers two ways to help...

Reflexivity, Subjectivity, and the Constructed Self: A Buddhist Model

Asian Philosophy July 3, 2015 Matthew Mackenzie 13 citations

The aim of this article is to take up three closely connected questions. First, does consciousness essentially involve subjectivity? Second, what is the connection, if any, between pre-reflective self-consciousness and subjectivity? And, third, does consciousness necessarily involve an ego or self? I will draw on the Yogācāra–Madhyamaka synthesis of Śāntarakṣita (eighth century common era) to...
