Listening to drumming at four beats per second (theta frequency) can induce altered states of consciousness (ASC), marked by shifts in perception and awareness. In a study with 40 participants, ten-minute sessions of theta-range drumming produced stronger ASC reports than delta- or alpha-range rhythms. EEG recordings showed that individuals whose brains tracked the theta rhythm more closely reported more intense altered experiences, and this neural tracking predicted higher ASC across all drumming rhythms, suggesting a personal susceptibility. The findings indicate that theta brain activity may actively modulate conscious states, not just accompany them. Rhythmic stimulation offers a non-pharmacological way to alter consciousness, with possible uses in cognitive neuroscience and therapy.

Deliberately maintaining at least normal cognitive performance while in altered states of consciousness (ASCs) — termed ASC Competence — may enhance brain function through neuroplastic mechanisms. This practice imposes severe demands on executive control systems, as the key requirement is refusing to let performance degrade below baseline. Unlike other lifestyle activities, it simultaneously stresses multiple aspects of executive function. Shamans originally developed this discipline with structured curricula and apprenticeships over millennia. Modern biohackers, using sublingual ketamine, psilocybin microdosing, float tanks, and breathwork, are successors with superior neurochemical tools but often lack an intentional framework. The authors propose a formalization linking ASC Competence to the Tralse Blanket State.

Non-ordinary states of consciousness (NOSCs) entered through psychedelics, breathwork, hypnosis, or other means show therapeutic promise for improving well-being and reducing psychopathology. While research has mapped the central nervous system dynamics behind these states, the role of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) remains largely unexplored. Growing evidence suggests the ANS mediates processes linked to NOSCs, including emotional regulation, interoception, and cognitive function. This review proposes a framework where inducing physiological stress within a conducive context supports NOSC emergence, and the coexistence of high arousal and relaxation—sympathetic and parasympathetic tone—characterizes peak NOSCs. Understanding ANS dynamics may allow safer induction, optimized therapeutic impact, and real-time physiological monitoring of these states.
