The effect of online mindfulness training on connectedness to oneself, to others and to nature in students

University of Regensburg Publication Server January 1, 2026 Petra Jansen, Sabine Hoja, Lea Cassar et al.

Online mindfulness training over eight weeks improved mindfulness, connectedness to nature, and self-compassion in university students compared to a waitlist control group. Improvements in self-compassion and mindfulness accounted for about 36% and 34% of the reductions in perceived stress and increases in flourishing, respectively. However, the training did not significantly affect stress reduction, flourishing, state mindfulness, or prosociality. The findings suggest that online mindfulness can enhance some internal transformative qualities linked to well-being and sustainable behavior, but further research is needed to understand moderators of these effects.
