Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) and mindfulness-integrated cognitive behavior therapy (MiCBT) differ in their origins, structure, and evidence. MBCT was developed to prevent depressive relapse and has strong support from systematic reviews and meta-analyses, earning endorsement in clinical guidelines, but its single-disorder focus may limit its use in diverse health settings. MiCBT was designed for transdiagnostic applications, incorporating exposure procedures and compassion training to reduce avoidance, and shows promising early evidence, though it lacks inclusion in clinical guidelines. More high-quality randomized controlled trials and systematic reviews are needed for MiCBT, while MBCT requires greater attention to dissemination and implementation research.
Mindfulness-integrated Cognitive Behavior Therapy (MiCBT) produced large reductions in stress and increases in equanimity among 326 adults assessed at two psychology clinics. More severe depression and PTSD diagnoses predicted faster distress reduction, while PTSD and ADHD predicted greater life satisfaction gains. Younger age, lower baseline life satisfaction, and personality disorder diagnosis predicted lower treatment retention. Prior meditation experience increased the likelihood of enrolling in MiCBT but did not affect retention, whereas ADHD diagnosis predicted non-enrolment but not discontinuation after starting.
A transdiagnostic treatment called mindfulness-integrated cognitive behavior therapy (MiCBT) combines cognitive behavioral techniques with mindfulness meditation from the Vipassana tradition, focusing on body scanning to develop interoceptive awareness and equanimity. This randomized controlled trial will test whether group MiCBT reduces depression and anxiety symptoms in 120 adults with high psychological distress (K10 score of 20 or more) recruited from primary care. Participants will be assigned to an 8-week MiCBT program or a wait-list control group, with outcomes measured using the DASS-21 and K10. The study aims to determine if MiCBT offers a comprehensive therapeutic system applicable across diagnostic groups.
