Therapeutic encounters and the elicitation of community care.

Behavioral and Brain Sciences January 2018 Leander Steinkopf, Mícheál De Barra

Singh's analysis of shamanism is regarded as a contribution to the evolutionary study of healing encounters and evolutionary medicine. Shamans must create convincing healing spectacles, while sick individuals must convincingly express symptoms and suffering to motivate community care. Both have a shared interest in convincing onlookers. This is not restricted to shamanic treatment, but is still...

An existential perspective on the psychological function of shamans.

Behavioral and Brain Sciences January 2018 Simon Schindler, Jeff Greenberg, Stefan Pfattheicher

Shamans deal with events that involve the threat of death. They help buffer death anxiety because, through their claimed supernatural abilities, they can provide both hope for averting death and evidence for existence of a spirit world offering continuance beyond death. Thus, managing the threat of mortality probably played a major role in the development and maintenance of shamanism.

Toward a neurophysiological foundation for altered states of consciousness.

Behavioral and Brain Sciences 2018 Shadab Tabatabaeian, Carolyn Dicey Jennings 7 citations

Singh's cultural evolutionary theory posits that methods of inducing shamanic altered states of consciousness differ, resulting in profoundly different cognitive states. We argue that, despite different methods of induction, altered states of consciousness share neurophysiological features and cause shared cognitive and behavioral effects. This common foundation enables further cross-cultural...

New World Tryptamine Hallucinogens and the Neuroscience of Ayahuasca.

Current Topics in Behavioral Neurosciences 2018 Dennis J. Mckenna, Jordi Riba 67 citations

New World indigenous peoples are noted for their sophisticated use of psychedelic plants in shamanic and ethnomedical practices. The use of psychedelic plant preparations among New World tribes is far more prevalent than in the Old World. Yet, although these preparations are botanically diverse, almost all are chemically similar in that their active principles are tryptamine derivatives, either...

Introduction to Consciousness-based Practices

Staps December 19, 2017 Nancy Midol, Marceau Chenault, Laurel McEwen 4 citations

Into the Darkness: Deep Caves in the Ancient Near East

Journal of Landscape Ecology December 1, 2017 Michael Freikman 5 citations

Abstract In this paper I will present the assemblage of pottery vessels and objects of luxury dated to the Neolithic and Chalcolithic periods discovered in the Zarda Cave in Western Samaria, Israel. The context in which this assemblage was found is strongly reminiscent of other proto-historic depositions found in Israel. As determent of objects of value found in the deep and dark caves cannot...

Differences in Recumbent, Ecstatic Trance Postures in Terms of Dream Recall, Imagined Interactions, and Heart Rate

Imagination, Cognition and Personality November 27, 2017 James M. Honeycutt

Research has demonstrated the health benefits of a wide range of spiritual practices such as meditation and prayer, and similar nonspiritual practices like mindfulness. Shamanism is a spiritual practice that uses dream recall during ecstatic trances, and scientific research has shown health benefits of dream recall. Researchers have long realized the importance of intrapersonal communication...
