Exploratory study of non-ordinary states of consciousness during sleep show distinct electrophysiological features from wakefulness and canonical sleep stages.

Scientific Reports September 29, 2025 Nerea L Herrero, Yohann Corfdir, Aylin A Vázquez-Chenlo et al.

Consciousness does not always fade during sleep. Instead, it can re-emerge in the form of non-ordinary states of consciousness (NOSC), such as lucid dreams (LDs), sleep paralysis (SP), out-of-body experiences (OBEs), and false awakenings (FAs). While some of these states have been studied phenomenologically, their neurophysiological underpinnings remain unclear. In this exploratory study, we...

LuciTouch: Influencing Lucid Dreams Through Incorporation of Somatosensory Stimuli.

UIST Adjunct September 27, 2025 Ashlyn Doyle, P. Wang, Yuchen Zheng et al.

Lucid dreaming can offer many benefits, such as reducing nightmares and enhancing creativity; however, insufficient dream control may limit these benefits. To remedy this, we designed three modular somatosensory cues for use during lucid dreams that aim to enhance lucid dream body control. Through this process, we discovered several insights into designing systems to support lucid dreaming.

Noetic Dream: A Personalized VR and Meditation System for Lucid Dream Training

UIST Adjunct September 27, 2025 Yichen Yu, Qiaoran Wang

Lucid dreaming relies on a high level of metacognition and requires significant time and effort to master induction techniques, presenting obstacles for those seeking such experiences. This study proposes a personalized lucid dreaming training system Noetic Dream that combines virtual reality (VR) with open-monitoring(OM) meditation, acting on the mechanism of "dream awareness" through both...

Imagination and belief in dreams

Episteme September 18, 2025 Manhal Hamdo

Abstract Imagination plays various epistemic roles but can it help us address dream skepticism? This paper explores different conceptions of imagination – propositional, processual, and imagistic – and examines their relevance to the Cartesian dream argument. I distinguish between the phenomenology of dreaming and its epistemological threat, arguing that dream skepticism arises not from the...

Individual and situational factors predicting threatening events and pandemic-related threatening events in dreams during the COVID-19 pandemic

September 11, 2025 Ville Loukola, Jarno Tuominen, Eveliina Malinen et al. preprint

Previous studies have examined how the COVID-19 pandemic affected dream recall, dream content, and nightmares. However, relatively little attention has been devoted to the individual and situational factors associated with pandemic-induced changes in dreams. The threat simulation theory of dreaming predicts that threatening situations in our waking life (situational factors) influence...

Observer Dreams: Criteria and Frequency

Journal of Sleep Research September 11, 2025 Darren M. Lipnicki 1 citation

Numerous theories of dreaming consider embodied self-representation and participation in dream events as key features. However, past studies suggest that the dream self is absent or an uninvolved observer in over 10% of adult REM dreams. Further, these dreams can be similarly elaborate and of comparable narrative structure to participatory dreams. The current study presents new criteria for...

An Approach to Analyzing Emotions in Diary Text Entries

2025 International Russian Automation Conference September 7, 2025 A. Filippov, N. Shatalova, N. Yarushkina

This article introduces a hybrid approach for the classification of emotions in Russian dream diary texts. The research focuses on processing semi-structured data characterized by a high subjectivity in describing real-world entities. In this context, traditional approaches often show limited effectiveness. The article analyzes contemporary techniques for tonality and emotion analysis,...

Expanded September 3, 2025 Antoine Bellemare‐Pepin, Philipp Thölke, Karim Jerbi et al.

Oneiris is an interactive, AI-augmented brain-computer interface installation that explores personal and collective dreamscapes through generative artificial intelligence, real-time electroencephalography (EEG) neurofeedback, and Indigenous symbolic systems. Participants wear a wireless EEG headset and contribute dream narratives and hand-drawn sketches on a digital tablet. These inputs are...

To Behold the Naked Truth

Aries September 3, 2025 Elly Moseson

Abstract This article concerns a Hasidic homily describing a technique for lucid dream cultivation. The homily outlines a worldview in which fantasy and reality merge, and thoughts, both positive and negative, have real cosmic and personal consequences. To counter the allure of sexual fantasy, the homily recommends a form of Neoplatonic contemplation widely taught within early Hasidic circles....
