APNA, AANA issue statement on ketamine infusion therapy

Mental Health Weekly November 13, 2023 Valerie A. Canady

Observing that ketamine infusion therapy is increasingly being used for such mental health conditions as major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, treatment‐resistant depression, and post‐traumatic stress disorder, two national nursing associations have released a joint statement indicating that patients with psychiatric disorders may benefit from the use of ketamine infusion therapy.

Nebulized and intraperitoneal ketamine have equivalent antidepressant-like effect in the forced swim and tail suspension tests in mice.

Pharmacology, Biochemistry, and Behavior November 8, 2023 Aida A.C. Brandão, D. L. S. Deus, L. A. Duarte-Filho et al.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a debilitating illness that affects millions of people worldwide. Currently available antidepressants often take weeks to months to reach their full effect, which leads to an increased risk of suicidal behavior in patients with MMD. Intranasally, esketamine has emerged as an alternative to current antidepressants because of its rapid onset and long-lasting...

Managing expectations with psychedelic microdosing

npj Mental Health Research November 8, 2023 Omer A. Syed, Benjamin Tsang 4 citations

The recent years have seen an unprecedented surge of psychedelic research. Studies with psilocybin (colloquially known as magic mushrooms), in particular, have shown promise in ameliorating symptoms of treatment-refractory depression, anxiety, and substance use disorder, among others 1 , 2 . Microdosing, the practice of regularly taking roughly a tenth of full psychedelic doses, is becoming...

Pharmacists’ perspectives on psilocybin in Canada

JAPhA Practice Innovations November 8, 2023 Elizabeth Sugiarto, Rebecca Leung, Jamie Yuen 1 citation

AbstractBackground Psilocybin is the main psychoactive component of a naturally occurring psychedelic organism commonly referred to as "magic mushrooms." Existing literature demonstrates beneficial neurologic effects in treatment-resistant depression, cancer-associated depression and anxiety, and substance use. The evidence base for psilocybin use is on the rise with the U.S. Food and Drug...

Experiences of People with Kidney Disease Following the Implementation of the Compassionate Mindful Resilience Programme: Qualitative Findings from the COSMIC Study.

Healthcare November 8, 2023 Anna Wilson, Clare Mckeaveney, Claire Carswell et al. 5 citations

Kidney disease is a progressive, debilitating condition. Patients experience challenging physical and psychological symptoms and are at increased risk of anxiety, depression, and poor mental wellbeing. Access to specialist psychological or social support is limited, with inadequate provision of psychosocial support available across UK renal units. The COSMIC study (examining the acceptability...

Beyond the 5-HT2A Receptor: Classic and Nonclassic Targets in Psychedelic Drug Action.

Journal of Neuroscience November 8, 2023 Lindsay P. Cameron, Joseph Benetatos, Vern Lewis et al. 88 citations

Serotonergic psychedelics, such as psilocybin and LSD, have garnered significant attention in recent years for their potential therapeutic effects and unique mechanisms of action. These compounds exert their primary effects through activating serotonin 5-HT2A receptors, found predominantly in cortical regions. By interacting with these receptors, serotonergic psychedelics induce alterations in...

Psycholytic dosing or 'microdosing' of Amanita muscaria (red fly agaric) mushrooms—A retrospective case study

PsyArXiv November 7, 2023 Mika Turkia 2 citations preprint

Following advice received in a dream, a woman in her early thirties, suffering from depression, anxiety, and sleep disorders caused by complex trauma in her childhood, experimented with 'microdosing' or psycholytic dosing of Amanita muscaria (fly agaric) mushrooms. During a 3.5-month period with an intuition-based, gradually declining dosing scheme, her symptoms significantly decreased. No...

Microdosing ketamine in Drosophila does not inhibit SERT like SSRIs, but causes behavioral changes mediated by glutamate and serotonin receptors

bioRxiv Preprint Server November 7, 2023 Kelly E. Dunham, Kani H. Khaled, Leah Weizman et al. preprint

Recently, the FDA approved microdosing ketamine for treatment resistant depression. Traditional antidepressants, like serotonin selective reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), block serotonin reuptake, but it is not clear if ketamine blocks serotonin reuptake. Here, we tested the effects of feeding ketamine and SSRIs to Drosophila melanogaster larvae, which has a similar serotonin system to mammals, and...

Effect Of Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) on Anxiety and Blood Pressure for Hypertension: A scoping review

Citra Delima Scientific journal of Citra Internasional Institute November 6, 2023 Ady Irawan Am, Anjani Janmabhumi, Ziara Arum Wulandari et al.

Hypertension, a prevalent and chronic medical condition, is often associated with elevated anxiety levels, contributing to its progression and complications. Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) has emerged as a potential intervention to address both anxiety and hypertension. This scoping review aims to explore the existing literature on the effect of MBCT on anxiety and blood pressure in...

DOES THE PHENOMENOLOGY OF THE PSILOCYBIN EXPERIENCE PREDICT LONG-TERM EFFECTS ON MOOD AND WELL-BEING IN HEALTHY VOLUNTEERS?

IBRO Neuroscience Reports November 6, 2023 Tomáš Páleníček, Tereza Klučková, Marek Nikolič et al.

INTRODUCTION: The mechanisms by which the psychedelic drug psilocybin, a novel rapid-acting antidepressant, improves depressive symptoms are still unclear. One candidate mechanism is the impact of the phenomenology of the psychedelic experience, with positive phenomenology hypothesised to be associated with positive long-term outcomes and fearful phenomenology hypothesised to be associated with...
