Dynamic causal modeling of low-density resting-state EEG in long-term meditation practitioners

Long-term meditation practice alters connectivity within two key resting-state brain networks: the default mode network (DMN) and the salience network (SN). Experienced meditators show enhanced self-referential processing in the DMN and reduced reactivity in the SN, suggesting that meditation refines attentional control and internal awareness. The study used dynamic causal modeling for EEG to analyze effective connectivity in a unique monastic population—monks and geshes from the Tibetan University of Sera Jey in India. These findings provide new insights into the neurophysiological mechanisms underlying long-term meditation and highlight monastic practitioners as a valuable model for studying experience-related brain changes.

Report from a Tibetan Monastery: EEG neural correlates of concentrative and analytical meditation

Concentrative meditation produces more numerous and marked changes in EEG power than analytical meditation, mainly increasing theta, alpha, and beta frequency ranges. Twenty-three Tibetan Buddhist monks and geshes from Sera-Jey Monastery in India participated in ecological EEG recordings within the monastery, performing analytical or concentrative meditation sessions at their best after a 5-minute baseline. The collaboration with the monastic community helped identify expert meditators and clarify differences between meditation types, addressing the limitation that heterogeneity of practices often hinders generalization of meditation research.

During Buddhist meditations that involve one-pointed concentration, analytical meditation on bodhicitta and emptiness, and tantric visualizations, auditory event-related potentials (ERPs) in 115 Buddhist monks show decreased mismatch negativity amplitudes, decreased N1 and P2 amplitudes to deviant stimuli, and decreased P3a amplitudes to novel stimuli compared to a control state of relaxed wakefulness. These outcomes suggest that such meditations are accompanied by a reduction in the physiological processes responsible for maintaining attention on the outside world and recognizing changes in sensory stimuli.

Tibetan Buddhist monastic debate: Psychological and neuroscientific analysis of a reasoning-based analytical meditation practice.

Analytical meditation and monastic debate, contemplative practices central to Tibetan Buddhist monastic training at Sera Jey Monastic University, have been largely unexplored in Western science. Based on discussions with teachers and senior students and preliminary experiments, the authors outline a theory of the psychological mechanisms underlying this highly physical form of debate. They propose that successful debating requires reasoning, critical thinking, attentional focus, working memory, emotion regulation, confidence in reasoning, and social connectedness. The cumulative hours of debate practice over 20+ years of monastic training likely cultivate these skills. Scientific research is needed to test these hypotheses and determine debate's role in psychological wellbeing and educational achievement.
