Abstract

Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) has Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy as the gold standard of treatment. This has been incorporating mindfulness techniques as effective therapeutic resources. This study analyzed the effectiveness of a relaxation protocol with mindfulness and breathing techniques in children with ADHD treated at a mental health outpatient clinic. A randomized, quasi-experimental, before-and-after clinical trial was carried out. Data for analysis and comparison of symptoms were collected pre-and post-intervention, using a sociodemographic and clinical questionnaire, Swanson, Nolan and Pelham Scale IV (SNAP-IV) and Bateria Psicológica para Avaliação da Atenção-2. 20 children participated, 11 underwent the intervention (GI) and 9 formed the control group (GII). The general results indicated that the protocol had improvement effects on inattention and hyperactivity in relation to GII. According to the results of the attention subtypes evaluated, the GI demonstrated improvement in concentrated, alternating and general attention. The present research suggests that breathing and mindfulness techniques are effective in reducing ADHD symptoms. Studies with larger samples and assessment of long-term follow-up effects are needed.
