Representationalism is a prominent approach in contemporary philosophy of mind that emphasizes the intentional character of the mind. This paper first provides a descriptive analysis and then a critical evaluation of different types of representationalism. It begins by discussing the phenomenal character of experience and subjective feel through Thomas Nagel's 'What Is It Like to Be a Bat?', highlighting a strong but not necessary link between representationalism and functionalism, and emphasizing Nagel's view that phenomenal consciousness resists functional explanation.
