False insights—moments of sudden, incorrect understanding—can be triggered in anyone under the right conditions, not just people prone to psychosis or delusional thinking. In an experiment with 200 participants who completed an adapted version of the FIAT paradigm, which elicits false 'Aha' moments for unsolvable anagrams, no association was found between these experimentally induced false insights and measures of schizotypy, need for cognition, jumping to conclusions, aberrant salience, faith in intuition, or cognitive reflection. The findings suggest that experiencing false insights may be a general human phenomenon rather than a marker of particular thinking styles or psychosis proneness.

Insights accompanied by “Aha!” experiences are studied in the lab, but these may miss the full range of insight as it occurs naturally. In an online study of 73 adults with prior psychedelic experience, participants rated insights from four contexts: psychedelic experiences, everyday life, word puzzles (Compound Remote Associates), and ambiguous images. Psychedelic insights scored higher than everyday insights on intensity, meaning, ineffability, and perceived belief change, while laboratory insights scored lower than both naturalistic contexts. Meaning was the strongest predictor of perceived belief change, and after accounting for phenomenological dimensions, context no longer predicted belief change. Lab paradigms capture core “Aha!” features but underrepresent personal meaning and belief updating.

Feelings of insight help people select ideas from the stream of consciousness by capturing attention and generating intuitive confidence, enabling fast action under uncertainty. This 'Eureka heuristic' is explained through active inference: implicit restructuring via Bayesian reduction produces a higher-order prediction error (the content of insight), while dopaminergic precision-weighting of that error accounts for the confidence, pleasure, and attentional capture (the feeling of insight). The account aligns with the phenomenology, accuracy, and neural unfolding of insight, as well as its effects on belief and decision-making. Dangers include the formation and entrenchment of false beliefs and vulnerability of insights under psychoactive substances and misinformation.

In a preregistered experiment, participants solved problems while squeezing a dynamometer to capture real-time feelings of insight. A strong positive relationship emerged between Aha moments and accuracy for problems requiring implicit processing. The intensity of the insight experience further predicted solution accuracy, and participants unintentionally embodied this intensity by squeezing the dynamometer more tightly, which also predicted accuracy. The authors argue that the dynamometer captures both process and feeling simultaneously, measures Aha moments on a continuum, and shows that the feeling of Aha carries information about an idea's veracity. Findings are discussed in light of a theoretical account where feelings of insight act as a heuristic for selecting ideas from consciousness.
