Application of meditation for stress management

International journal of yogic, human movement and sports sciences January 1, 2023 Prem Sukh, Brinda B. Sharma

Regular meditation practice can reduce stress by activating the body's relaxation response, lowering stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline, and decreasing blood pressure and heart rate. Mindfulness meditation, which involves nonjudgmental attention to the present moment, helps individuals observe stress-related thoughts and emotions without becoming overwhelmed, fostering emotional resilience and equanimity. Meditation also improves focus, attention, and cognitive flexibility, aiding clearer decision-making under stress. It promotes better sleep through practices like guided imagery or progressive muscle relaxation. Under the guidance of a competent instructor, meditation can be safely practiced by almost anyone, excluding those who are fanatic or psychotic, without harmful side-effects.
