Mindfulness training leads to small-to-moderate increases in self-reported dispositional mindfulness, with effect sizes ranging from g = 0.28 to 0.49 across five dimensions (Attention, Description, Nonjudgment, Nonreactivity, Observation). Changes in these mindfulness dimensions are moderately correlated with beneficial mental health outcomes (r = .27 to 0.30), except for Observation (r = .16). Moderation analyses yielded inconsistent results, and the overall findings highlight limitations in current mindfulness assessment and suggest directions for future research.
Mindfulness training improves cognitive control in social situations by enhancing early top-down attention. In a randomized controlled study, participants who completed four brief mindfulness sessions showed better discrimination of facial expressions and more efficient cognitive control compared to a control group. Those with poorer baseline performance benefited most. Mindfulness also improved conflict monitoring of behavioral tendencies, as shown by larger No-Go N200 brain responses. These results suggest mindfulness helps people manage the unique demands of social contexts, particularly for those with greater room for improvement, and that early attention deployment may be a key mechanism behind mindfulness's regulatory benefits.
