Imagery Rescripting and Imaginal Exposure in Nightmare Disorder Compared to Positive Imagery: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics January 1, 2021 Carolin Schmid, Kathrin Hansen, Tana Kröner-Borowik et al.

A single session of imagery rescripting, imaginal exposure, or positive imagery, followed by four weeks of home practice, all reduced nightmare distress, nightmare frequency, nightmare effects, and general psychopathology in 96 patients with nightmare disorder. Self-efficacy improved. No treatment outperformed the others, and no demographic or disorder characteristics predicted outcomes. Even brief nightmare treatments are effective regardless of personal characteristics, and different interventions produce similar results.
