The Development of a Sleep Intervention for Firefighters: The FIT-IN (Firefighter's Therapy for Insomnia and Nightmares) Study.

International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health November 24, 2020 Eun Hee Jang, Yujin Hong, Yeji Kim et al.

A tailored sleep intervention for firefighters, FIT-IN, which combines brief behavioral therapy for insomnia with imagery rehearsal therapy, improved sleep and reduced nightmares in a preliminary study. Thirty-nine Korean firefighters completed three sessions (two face-to-face group sessions and one telephone session). Sleep diaries showed significant increases in sleep efficiency and decreases in sleep onset latency, number of awakenings, and time in bed. Questionnaire scores also indicated significant reductions in insomnia and nightmare severity. The authors suggest FIT-IN may be a feasible option for alleviating sleep disturbance in firefighters, but note that further studies are needed to confirm its effectiveness.
