The Neuroplasticity of Yoga: AI and Neural Imaging Perspectives on Cognitive Enhancement - Yoga-Induced Brain State Modulation

Applied Medical Research February 28, 2022 Nagarjuna Reddy Aturi

A review of meditation and yoga research indicates that these practices increase healthy brain activity. Long-term contemplation is linked to specific neuroplastic changes in functional brain connectivity. Focused attention meditation alters connectivity in networks involved in attention and monitoring, while open monitoring meditation involves networks related to emotion regulation. Chronic stress and depressive behaviors are associated with reduced neuroplasticity, including neuronal decay in the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus. The review proposes a new integrative model of neuroplasticity relevant to depression. Yoga may serve as an effective adjunctive treatment for clinical and aging populations, though traditional neurological rehabilitation lacks patient engagement and has limited effects.
