Aerobic training modulates salience network and default mode network metabolism in subjects with mild cognitive impairment

NeuroImage: Clinical August 22, 2018 F.H.G. Porto, Artur Martins Coutinho, Fabio Luís de Souza Duran et al.

A 24-week moderate-intensity aerobic training program in 65 people with mild cognitive impairment altered resting brain glucose metabolism in key networks. Metabolism decreased in the salience network (anterior temporal lobes, anterior cingulate, hippocampus, caudate) and increased in the default mode network (precuneus). These changes moved toward the metabolic patterns expected in healthy aging, suggesting improved efficiency of the salience network and greater control over other brain networks.
