Consciousness studies and evolutionary biology in Stoppard’s The Hard Problem

At a 2015 Royal National Theatre platform event, Tom Stoppard discussed his play 'The Hard Problem', which intertwines the banking crisis with questions of altruistic goodness in light of evolutionary biology. The article analyzes how the play references evolutionary biology and consciousness studies, and how these references shape the characters, plot, and the original RNT production.

Embodied consciousness, warm-up and cool-down

In consciousness studies, the concept of embodied consciousness has gained traction over the past decade. This position holds either that consciousness involves not just the brain but other body parts as well, or, more moderately, that embodied mental capacities depend on mental representations or processes related to the body.
