Meditation research suffers from a labeling problem: different mental practices are grouped under broad terms like mindfulness, hiding real differences in attention training and views of the mind. This leads to inconsistent EEG and fMRI results. The authors build a knowledge graph ontology linking brain measurements to practitioners' experiences across six traditions (Samatha Jhana, Vipassana, Dzogchen Rigpa, devotional/deity practices, Zen/Seon hwadu investigation, and Jōdo Shinshū nembutsu recitation). They add a third axis to the standard two-part model of consciousness, tracking movement toward open, nondual awareness.

Consumer EEG headbands, HRV biofeedback devices, and closed-loop neurostimulation systems often reward measurable proxy signals rather than the intended outcomes, a flaw the authors term 'reward misspecification.' This occurs when the policy maximizing proxy reward does not maximize the true intended outcome, producing three failure modes: proxy mismatch, strategy shortcutting, and transfer failure. The authors review devices including Muse, HeartMath, Unyte IOM2, and clinical neurofeedback systems as examples. They introduce a four-tier measurability taxonomy and propose a design framework to avoid all failure modes, using a single Tier-1 target (mind-wandering onset via EEG), negative-only cueing, temporal separation of fast EEG and slow somatic feature streams, and transfer to unassisted practice as the only success criterion. No current product meets all four criteria.

A pilot study compared a beginner meditation group (21 participants) with an experienced group (9 participants, >1 year of practice) that also engaged in mindful art. Over 21 days, with twice-weekly 90-minute remote sessions and daily home practice, blood pressure, pulse, breathing rate, and subjective relaxation were measured. The experienced group showed larger average within-session improvements in breath rate and relaxation. The beginner group showed greater improvement over the whole study period, though their average scores remained lower than the experienced group. The findings suggest mindful art may enhance meditation benefits for experienced practitioners, while beginners gain more from standard meditation alone.

A narrative synthesis of eight studies (423 participants) examined mindfulness-based interventions for anxiety in people aged 12–25. Most studies reported significant decreases in anxiety symptoms related to social phobia, chronic pain, stress, and academic performance. However, the amount of improvement varied, and different anxiety scales made comparisons difficult. Interventions that included mindfulness information sessions for parents or mindful physical activity such as yoga showed better results. The review offers recommendations for tailoring mindfulness treatments to young people.
