Information supporting the survival of human consciousness: an exploration of references reported in the winner essays of the Bigelow Institute of Consciousness Studies contest

PsyArXiv February 8, 2023 Patrizio Tressoldi, Marjorie Woollacott, Charles J Fox preprint

The references cited in the 29 winner essays were examined with respect to their type.Out of the non-duplicate 3679 references, 51% were books, 37% were scientific papers, 8% were scientific materials, and the remaining 4% were other materials.Among the top 10 most cited references, 7 were books and 6 were related to near-death experiences.Materials related to near-death experiences are...

Spiritual awakening and transformation in scientists and academics.

Explore 2023 Marjorie Woollacott, Anne Shumway-Cook 18 citations

The purpose of this study was to document both quantitatively and qualitatively the characteristics of spiritual awakenings and their transformational effects in scientists and academics who reported having experienced this phenomenon; it also aimed to explore barriers these individuals perceived to sharing their experiences with others within society. METHODS: An interview questionnaire was...

An encounter with the self: A thematic and content analysis of the DMT experience from a naturalistic field study.

Frontiers in Psychology 2023 Pascal Michael, David Luke, Oliver Robinson 16 citations

N,N-Dimethyltryptamine (DMT) is an endogenous serotonergic psychedelic capable of producing radical shifts in an experience that have significant implications for consciousness and its neural correlates, especially given the "disconnected consciousness" suggested by the "breakthrough" DMT state. Its increasing usage and clinical trial indicate the growing importance of a thorough elucidation of...

Thanatos Revised: What Psychology May Look Like with Positive, Enduring Attitudes Towards Death and Dying

Human Arenas December 1, 2022 Rosa Traversa 1 citation

Death seems still to be a taboo in contemporary society, and in Psychology as well. Crucial debates around the end of life are emerging in a variety of clinical, cultural, and philosophical realms in relation to the meaning of consciousness and near-death experiences. After the advent of quantum physics, the very notion of ‘evidence-based science’ has profoundly changed and new markers on the...

Neural correlates of memories of near-death and mystical experiences: Preliminary research

World Journal of Advanced Research and Reviews November 30, 2022 Calixto Machado, Andrew B. Newberg, Yanín Machado et al.

This study compares the critical neural correlates of two altered states of consciousness: near-death experience (NDE) and spiritual contemplative experience (SCE), a.k.a. mystical experience. For Centuries NDE and SCE have been reported by all faiths, including Abrahamic religious contemplatives: Christian mystics, Muslim Sufis, and Jewish Kabbalists. Their anecdotal reports show that both NDE...

Continuous autonomic nervous system assessment using heart rate variability methodology during near-death and mystical experiences

Zenodo (CERN European Organization for Nuclear Research) November 30, 2022 Calixto Machado, Andrew B. Newberg, Yanín Machado et al. 1 citation preprint

Introduction: We have recently recorded, processed, and published preliminary research (Part I) on brain activity by quantitative electroencephalography (EEG) tomography (QEEGt), comparing separate subjects remembering their near-death experiences (NDEs) and mystical experiences (SCE). Several reports have affirmed that NDE and SCE are related to important functional changes in the autonomic...

Continuous EEG of memories of Near-death and mystical experiences: Preliminary research

World Journal of Advanced Research and Reviews November 11, 2022 Calixto Machado, Andrew B. Newberg, Yanín Machado et al.

We recently recorded, processed, and published brain activity by quantitative electroencephalography (QEEG) and quantitative electroencephalography (QEEGt), comparing separate subjects remembering their near-death experience (NDE) and mystical experience. Our studies refer to a mystical experience as a spiritual contemplative experience (SCE). We found neural and Greyson Scale (GS) correlations...

Some Conceptual and Empirical Shortcomings of IIT

Journal of Anomalous Experience and Cognition October 18, 2022 Edward F. Kelly 3 citations

The Integrated Information Theory of consciousness (IIT) has generated much excitement inside and outside the scientific community, and seems to many the leading contender for a satisfactory theory grounded in systems neuroscience. It is a bold theory, one that provides plausible explanations for various recognized neuroscientific facts, makes surprising predictions that go beyond current...

Neurobiologie der Nahtoderfahrung

Universitätsverlag Kiel | Kiel University Publishing eBooks September 1, 2022 W. Kuhn
