Mindfulness and self-compassion in trauma-related adjustment among adult women: a three-wave multi-regional study.

Frontiers in Psychology May 29, 2026 Siqun Zhan, Dingfan Zhang, Yifan Ou

Trauma-related distress in adult women often extends beyond posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) to include depressive symptoms and dissociation, yet the roles of mindfulness and self-compassion across these symptom domains remain insufficiently clarified. This study examined mindfulness and self-compassion as psychological resources associated with trauma-related symptoms among trauma-exposed...

The chicken and the egg - a systematic review of the relationship between recreational drug use and mental health in the general population

May 29, 2026 Benjamin Clayden, Movin Abeywickrema, Maria Bălăeţ preprint

Temporal relationships between the recreational use of alcohol, tobacco and cannabis with mental health challenges have been extensively reviewed. However, this is not the case for other widely consumed drugs. Between 7/6/23 and 3/12/23 we searched Web of Science, EMBASE, PsychINFO and MEDLINE databases for studies investigating temporal relationships between recreational drug use (RDU) and...

Surgical Protocol for a Large, Resealable Cranial Window Enabling Longitudinal, Multi-Modal Electrophysiology Recordings of Mouse Default Mode Network.

Journal of Visualized Experiments May 29, 2026 Tommi Kiiso, Paula Partanen, Keyrstin Jacobs et al.

The default mode network (DMN) is a central, large-scale brain network implicated in a range of cognitive functions and neuropsychiatric disorders, such as major depressive disorder (MDD). Studying the DMN's complex dynamics in animal models provides invaluable insights into its function in both healthy and pathological states. However, performing stable, long-term, large-scale...

When both treatments unblinded, psychedelics not more effective than antidepressants

The Brown University Psychopharmacology Update May 29, 2026

A systematic review and meta‐analysis comprising 24 trials has concluded that when both psychedelic and antidepressant trials in the treatment of depression are unblinded, psychedelics are no more effective than open‐label antidepressants. The findings call into question some optimistic projections about the efficacy of psychedelics in depression treatment.

Connection to Nature and Psychological Wellbeing: The Role of Mindfulness and Spirituality

International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health May 29, 2026 Simin Kazemi, Julia Torquati, Tuyen Huynh

This study examined mindfulness and spirituality as potential explanatory mechanisms underlying the associations between connection to nature and young adults’ psychological wellbeing (depression, anxiety, perceived stress, life satisfaction, and positive states of mind). Two studies employed structural equation modeling (SEM) to test these pathways using different conceptualizations and...

Inhibition of compulsive behavior by dextromethorphan on schedule-induced polydipsia in rats: Role of NMDA, sigma-1, and 5-HT receptors.

Pharmacology, Biochemistry, and Behavior May 29, 2026 Madeline T Van Fossen, Alexia G Dalton, Adam J Prus

Dextromethorphan (DM) is an FDA-approved treatment for major depressive disorder when combined with bupropion. DM functions as an inhibitor for 5-HT membrane transporters and antagonist for sigma-1 receptors (S1Rs) and NMDA receptors, which are pharmacological actions potentially therapeutically relevant for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The present study examined DM and compounds...

Effect of psilocybin-assisted psychotherapy on anxiety symptoms: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Journal of Psychedelic Studies May 29, 2026 Alex P. Hood, Gary R Elkins

Abstract Background and Aims Psilocybin-assisted psychotherapy (PAP) is a novel, transdiagnostic treatment in which the 5-HT2A receptor agonist psilocybin is combined with psychotherapy. Studies to date have evaluated PAP's effects on depression, substance use, and end-of-life adjustment. Relatively less attention has been given to its effects on anxiety symptoms, which are highly comorbid with...

A spatiotemporal gating hypothesis for psilocybin plasticity: reconciling the 5-HT₂A-TrkB mechanistic paradox.

Cell Discovery May 29, 2026 Gang Pei

Psilocybin has emerged as a transformative, rapid-acting, and long-lasting therapeutic for treatment-resistant depression, with its efficacy rooted in the induction of sustained structural and functional remodeling of mood-regulating neural circuits 1 , 2 . However, the field faces a fundamental mechanistic paradox that defies linear signaling models: psilocin, the bioactive metabolite of...

Psychedelic-induced hypomania and mania: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Molecular Psychiatry May 29, 2026 Mickael Eskinazi, Rayan Nasserdine, Romane M Cusin et al.

Serotonergic psychedelics are increasingly investigated as treatments for affective disorders. Concerns persist regarding their potential to induce hypomania or mania, particularly in individuals with bipolar spectrum vulnerability. Whether these substances precipitate transient mood switches or contribute to persistent bipolar illness or diagnostic transition remains unclear. We conducted a...

Piloting of Augmented Reality-Based Psychoeducation with Mindfulness Intervention for Chronic Low Back Pain

Cognitive Therapy and Research May 28, 2026 Robin Conen, Nikolai Hepke, Jörg Lohscheller et al.

Abstract Background Chronic low back pain (CLBP) affects many globally. This study explored potential effects of an augmented reality (AR) intervention combining psychoeducation and mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR)-body scan. The pilot study investigated pain intensity and pain-related outcomes, focusing on AR intervention versus conventional methods, aiming to establish a foundation...
