Abstract
Phono-instruments, including both musical instruments and sound tools, are common in the ritual practices of the Ob Ugrians. Research in this sphere is very important for studying the ethnocultural history of the Khanty and Mansi. The aim of this paper is to identify the functioning of phono-instruments and the degree of their integration into rituals. This research is based on publications from the 19th to early 21st centuries, the author’s field notes from the 1990s and 2000s, and publicly available museum collections. The composition of the phono-instruments used in bear, shamanic, sacrificial, and other rituals has been established. Ritual musical instruments include chordophones (harp, zither, lute), while sound tools include membranophones (shamanic drums, birch bark calls) and idiophones (staffs, ritual arrows, rattles, including bells and jingle bells). Analysis reveals a functional hierarchy in their ritual attachment. The shamanic drum and struck/ percussion idiophones are used exclusively in sacred contexts. Chordophones and rattles have dual purposes. The lute and jaw harp figure only sporadically in the ritual sphere, and the use of hunting calls and toys in shamanism remains hypothetical. This differentiation demonstrates that strictly ritual instruments are associated with an archaic stratum of sound tools inherited from the early taiga populations of Western Siberia. Chordophones likely represent a later stratum, shaped by external cultural influences and contacts with migrant ethnic groups.
