| Key points | The paper argues that Kant's Dreams of a Spirit-Seer concludes with skepticism toward reports of the spirit world because visionary experiences are inevitably shaped by imagination and mix truth with fiction. It further contends that Kant's parallel critique of spirit-seers and Wolffian metaphysics exposes a dilemma concerning the concept of immaterial substance, revealing the difficulty of conceiving such an entity clearly. |
Abstract
In his Dreams of a Spirit-Seer, Kant discusses whether the tales of the spirit world— reported notably by the Swedish visionary Emanuel Swedenborg—deserve to be believed. His conclusion is one of skepticism toward all such mystical narratives. What, exactly, are the arguments that lead him to this conclusion? In this short study, I analyze one important point in Kant’s reasoning and elucidate some of its deeper implications by comparing Dreams of a Spirit-Seer with its main target, Swedenborg’s Arcana Coelestia. Kant observes that the mystical experiences of visionaries are inevitably influenced by their imagination, resulting in a confused mixture of truth and fiction. This observation, I argue, teaches us not to believe blindly in individual visionaries, while at the same time not losing respect for spirituality in general. Kant’s argument has another, equally interesting implication. In his essay he attacks not only the spirit-seers but also the metaphysical doctrines of the soul upheld by Christian Wolff’s school. According to my analysis, this two-front operation succeeds in showing that spirit-seeing and metaphysics together constitute a serious dilemma concerning the concept of immaterial substance, ironically revealing how difficult it is to conceive such an entity clearly. It is worth noting that Kant’s reflection on this dilemma deeply shapes his skepticism toward tales of spirits.
