By putting on a headset, users can find themselves in a Zen garden, forest, or mountaintop dojo, where guided breathing is paired with visuals, sounds, and even interactive features that make meditation more engaging and intuitive. This immersive quality—what psychologists call “presence”—helps reduce distraction and makes the experience feel remarkably real, potentially accelerating learning for beginners who often struggle to focus. This chapter traces the history of VR technology, from Morton Heilig’s multisensory experiments in the 1950s to the rise of Oculus Rift and Meta Quest headsets, setting the stage for meditation-specific applications like TRIPP, Calm Place, RelaxVR, and ZenVR. Research into VRM is still young, but early findings suggest promising benefits.
