Abstract

This chapter introduces mindful metacognition as a critical biohack for the twenty-first century—a powerful, evidence-based approach to addressing chronic stress, emotional reactivity, cognitive overload, and social fragmentation. Drawing from evolutionary psychology, neuroscience, and contemplative traditions, the chapter explores how modern life activates maladaptive threat responses, undermining both physical and mental health. It presents mindful metacognition as a holistic strategy for effectively observing, regulating, and transforming cognitive and emotional experiences. The chapter begins by reviewing theoretical models linking mindfulness and metacognition to psychological flexibility and resilience, emphasizing their complementary roles in reducing experiential avoidance. It then highlights how mindful metacognitive practices mitigate physiological stress responses, reduce chronic disease risks, and promote sustained healthspan—years characterized by good health and functional independence. Educational and therapeutic implications are discussed, demonstrating how these practices improve emotional regulation, cognitive flexibility, and overall well-being. Practical strategies for integrating mindful metacognition into daily life and professional practice are presented, alongside explicit attention to their role in enhancing social interactions, communication, and community cohesion. The chapter concludes with recommendations for further research into the biological, psychological, and social impacts of mindful metacognition, advocating for policies supporting its widespread adoption in healthcare, education, and workplace settings. By equipping individuals and communities with the tools to respond adaptively rather than reactively, mindful metacognition emerges as essential for navigating contemporary challenges and fostering human flourishing.
