Abstract
Focused attention (FA) meditation involves sustaining attention on a specific object while disengaging from distractions when they arise. Long-term practice has been linked to improved attentional regulation and structural brain changes, reflecting neuroplasticity. This study investigated whether a brief FA meditation could induce measurable functional changes in neural activity related to attentional control, potentially mirroring benefits of long-term practice. Novice participants completed two conditions: a 5-minute guided FA meditation and a 5-minute silent control, with EEG recorded during each session. Immediately afterward, participants performed a 30-second Stroop task. We hypothesized that meditation would improve Stroop performance and modulate EEG activity. Results showed a directional trend supporting this, but no statistically significant differences were observed in Stroop performance or EEG measures. Our findings suggest that a brief FA meditation may be insufficient to produce measurable cognitive or neural changes comparable to those reported in long-term meditation practitioners. The absence of EEG differences further suggests that the session may not have induced a sufficiently strong meditation-related cognitive state. Overall, we suggest that while brief meditation may produce some transient functional effects, more stable attentional benefits are likely to depend on sustained meditation practice.
