Abstract

This chapter is designed to offer a comprehensive overview of five core psychedelic medicines—ketamine, psilocybin, MDMA, LSD, and ayahuasca—highlighting their distinct pharmacological properties, cultural origins, therapeutic applications, and clinical research. Although each substance offers a unique entry point into expanded states of consciousness, they share a common potential to catalyze deep healing and psychological transformation when held in the right therapeutic container. Drawing on both historical and contemporary studies, I explore how these medicines are being used to treat a range of mental health conditions, from treatment-resistant depression and PTSD to existential distress and addiction. While I emphasize the neurobiological mechanisms of each medicine, I also draw attention to its emotional, relational, and spiritual dimensions. At the end of each section, I have included clinical considerations to help guide therapists in determining which substances are appropriate for different client profiles.
