Abstract
Breathing does not only perform the function of keeping the body alive but plays an important role in promoting our physical, emotional, and mental wellbeing. Sudarshan Kriya Yoga Breathwork (“SKY Breath”) is a unique breathing practice involving several types of rhythmic breathing patterns, ranging from slow and calming to rapid and stimulating. Studies have shown that SKY Breath technique can effectively reduce stress, exhaustion and negative emotions resulting in a calm mind and energised and relaxed body. This research studied the lived experiences of nine individuals who practice SKY Breath without experiencing any adverse effects. Participants who took part in this study reported the following phenomena: (a) positive feelings; (b) increased sense of connection, (c) cleansing effects, (d) emotional stability, (e) feeling empowered, (f) feeling energised, and (g) integration of SKY Breath. Participants noted improvements to their quality of life and overall wellbeing. The findings also suggest that SKY Breath enables access to non-ordinary state of consciousness, which may bring positive benefits to participants.
