Retrospective data analysis to determine the effectiveness of intravenous ketamine therapy on patients suffering from depression with suicidal ideation

Industrial Psychiatry Journal January 1, 2023 Pradhyuman Chaudhary, Prathmesh Shah, Prakash Mehta 4 citations

Intravenous ketamine therapy is an effective alternative to electro-convulsive therapy for patients with depression and suicidal ideation. In a retrospective analysis of patients who received the therapy, significant improvements in depression and suicidality were observed at all evaluation points after treatment. The findings suggest that ketamine can provide a quick response for this psychiatric emergency, offering an option for those who may refuse ECT due to stigma or perceived risk.

Toxic traditions: Unveiling the psychiatric and neurological dangers of datura poisoning.

Industrial Psychiatry Journal January 1, 2025 V Pooja, Suprakash Chaudhury, Alisha Kumari

Datura stramonium poisoning, caused by tropane alkaloids such as atropine, hyoscyamine, and scopolamine, poses significant public health risks. In India, the plant's traditional and ceremonial use leads to accidental overdoses and chronic misuse, especially among vulnerable populations like children. Psychiatric symptoms include vivid hallucinations, agitation, and delirium, which can mimic psychosis and lead to self-harm. A multi-pronged approach is needed, including enhanced clinical awareness, public education, and regulatory policies to prevent exposure. Collaborative efforts among healthcare professionals, policymakers, and communities are essential for prompt treatment and prevention. Future research should focus on pharmaceutical treatments to aid chronic users and prevent long-term cognitive effects.
