The Pedagogy of Silence: Spiritual Purification and Moral Education in Islamic Sufism and Japanese Zen Buddhism

This article compares how Islamic Sufism and Japanese Zen Buddhism approach spiritual purification and moral education. Although both traditions use silence, contemplation, experiential learning, discipline, and a strong teacher–student relationship, their ultimate aims differ: Sufism seeks nearness to God and divine truth, while Zen pursues mental clarity and realization of emptiness (śūnyatā). By examining primary sources and academic literature through hermeneutical and comparative analysis, the study highlights universal pedagogical principles—such as silence for tranquility, practice for internalizing virtues, and holistic development integrating intellect, emotion, and spirit—that could inform modern moral and character education.

The Contribution of Similarities between Sufism and Japanese Buddhism to the Culture of Coexistence

Similarities between Sufism (a mystical interpretation of Islam) and Japanese Buddhism—particularly Zen and Jōdo (Pure Land) sects—can foster a culture of tolerance, dialogue, and coexistence among people of different beliefs. The article argues that shared goals such as inner peace, happiness, and a simple, balanced lifestyle provide common ground. Using a comparative history of religions methodology, the study presents these commonalities impartially and concludes that they can encourage more tolerant approaches to religious difference, strengthen inter-societal relationships, and serve as a global example for peaceful coexistence.
